I don't know that this is the best picture I've ever taken, but it's my favorite. This is Comet Hyakutake, taken in April 1996 on a hill in upstate NY with a 35 MM camera using a 200 MM lens... and NO TELESCOPE! I laid very still, aimed the camera and shot an entire 36 roll of film. This is the only one that came out.
Oh, and the 2 black lines in the picture are telephone and power lines running to our house.... opps.

excellent shot of the comet there! I love doing cloud pics myself and have some others.. just have to sift through the 1000s of pics to find them.. that one I posted is from a series I shot on a hillside in denver while waiting for a fireworks show in 2003.

No macro. Honestly, I don't know what kind of lens is on that camera (it's my family's camera). It's some sort of Sony DSLR, but I never researched it very much, it not being my camera. Getting close-up pictures without a macro is hard when you have to deal with your camera auto-focusing too far away, but once you can get the autofocus under control, a wide-angle can get up pretty close.

I'm going camera shopping this weekend though! Stoked about it.

Serious? You could take such a clear pic without macro. Must be a good camera. Happy shopping!

lol.. well in 2003 we were in Denver for the big blizzard, then in 2004 we had all the hurricanes here.. that hurricane was Frances. I went out driving around looking for shots. I wanted to go over to the beach for some, but the bridges were closed down so that's one of the shots I took along the banks of the intercoastal waterway. the shot at the beach was taken the day before.

thanks, took that one at Marineland, a local tourist attraction that was originally an oceanographic lab and turned into an attraction for visitors. Lately, it's had a hard time staying open with the changes in tourism traffic.

The contrast between the lovey dovey feel of the candy and the ants is great. I LOVE ants. As you also studied a lot of biology, am sure you share that!
I love ants too. They're very intersting with all of their ant wars.

As a macroorganism (like, the whole community acts like one organism), they are soooo smart. I really like reading about their behaviours.

-FLBettacouple

How many hurricanes have you been in? I've been in...
Charlie
Francis
Part of Ivan,Katrina, and Rita
part of Julia or jane, what ever that 2004 one was called.
I was in like, 5 more that I can't remember the names them

The last hurricane that I remember the name of was Wilma...I was right in the most violent part, which accually isn't the eye, but the very side of the eye. We were maybe 1mile from the eye but we still got hit by the eye wall, fortunetly, it was a category 3.

P.S. I LOVE HURRICANES!!!!!!! Even catigory 5's cause I know that I'm safe in my house.

Newtankdude, Hurricanes, huh?  OK, here's a couple pics for you.  I'm not sure which one it was, I think Ivan.
After a while oyu loose track of which is which.

Oh, FYI, I live just north of tampa, and have ridden out about 12 or so.  And it seems like there's always one on my birthday.

Lol, I live in Naples, so I'm hit a little more since hurricanes tend to stay south. since I love hurricanes, I hope there Another record this year, but for you, you might hope there's not lol.

By the way, you check out my pics? Their awsome, took em myself.

we're in the 'sweet spot' here in st.auggie.. we only had things up to cat.1 during the 2004 season and haven't taken a direct hit since people rode their horses to work.. the atlantic currents tend to steer hurricanes away from us.

yea, the main excitement for us is watching the new residents panic and buy all the canned food, batteries and bottled water every hurricane.

All we do is get a couple pizza's (for food for the week lol, we hook up the fridge to the generator or else *gag*), board the house, get a couple jugs of gas for the generator, and sit outside waiting for it to come and while its here! lol

lol.. yea.. that week we didn't have power, we did a whole lot of meat on the grill since we didn't have a generator (usually don't need one here.) fortunately, we got power (and cable) back just in time for the 1st NFL game of the season.
