I am putting together a 29 gallon tank and I'm looking into using sand. I've heard a lot of good things about Leslie's pool filter sand but I've heard the particles are large. Would it tear up Corys?
Is play sand a better/equal choice?I got my pool filter sand from Leslie's Pools but it wasn't their brand. It was called Lighthouse. I wouldn't say the grains are large but definitely larger than play sand. I've had it for a year with no issues and my corys are doing great on it.
I hear more negative things about play sand than positive because the grains are smaller and different sizes so they compact more, leading to possible gas pockets. But if you stir it often, you shouldn't have an issue. PFS grains are larger and more uniform so it compacts less. It's also a heavier sand so I don't have an issue with it getting stuck in my impellers or it getting sucked into my gravel siphon. I could actually put my siphon into the sand and it falls right back down when I lift it.
