Leopard Geckos

You can keep multiple leopard gekos in a tank and they are one of the best lizards! They come in all different color morphs and are so unique! I had 3 in a 10 gallon and they all did fine. I had 1male and 2 females and it is so cute when they shake their tails when they are about to pounce on their prey

I'm thinking of starting with the 10 gallon and one, unless there's a benefit to getting them at the same time.

I'm making the kids do over the top research before pulling the trigger.

I took them to look at fish today to see if I could sway them. But all it did was made me want to set up both tanks. Lol.

Lol cool! Is their another reptile that your kids like that I may be able to list some reptile pets that they will enjoy only if you are interested or are you doing fish in the 20g?

That would be great! This all started because they wanted a hermit crab. I was looking for something less smelly. If you have suggestions, that would be great since we're in the research stage.

Okay well do you like

Frogs?
Snakes?
Lizards?
Toads?
Fish?
Invertebrates?

What are you interested in doing with the 20 gallon and ask your kids what they like for me please

For a 10 gallon your main common options are:
Kenyan sand boa
Leopard gecko

For a 20 long other common options are:
Crested gecko (if the 20 gallon is turned to the side for climbing space)
Green anoles
Corn snake
Small male ball python

Any interest in terrestrial invertebrates or amphibians?

If you guys have no issues with snakes I'd say go with a snake...they're awesome. Corn snakes and Kenyan sand boas have less humidity and heating requirements than ball pythons, but ball pythons tend to be better handling snakes. Corn snakes come in a ton of different looking morphs, ball pythons have less extreme color options, but still a lot. Kenyan sand boas have only two common color morphs I think.

The biggest thing is that they want something they can handle, can pull out and interact with. They like frogs- we looked at adfs today though I think the 20 high is too tall. They said no snakes. They like fish but you can't take a fish out and hold it.

It's a 20 high if that changes things.

Hmmm about

Fire Belly Toads
Leopard Gekos
Fire Skink

What are the dimensions.

Yeah, that would. Ball pythons and corn snakes need more *slithering room.

For a 20 high, snake options would be more like a Kenyan sand boa or maybe a rubber boa or rosy boa if you could find one.

For lizards, one leopard gecko would be fine, or you could look into anoles or crested geckos.

I'd have to do some research on some of those, my specialty isn't really skinks. I'll go read up on them all.

Oh lol I already did I was thinking if you think they will work in the 20 high I should've explained it a little better

Fire skinks can reach 15inches

Crocodile skinks can reach 8-10inches

Both including tail

These look like they'd be fine in a 20 high:
Crested gecko
Flying gecko
Tree frog

These I think I'd be hesitant putting in a 20 high but it may work:
Giant day gecko
Crocodile skink

I don't think I'd put a fire skink in a 20 high personally. A 20 long would probably be fine, though.

I housed my leopard in a 20 long for months, I just recently changed him to an Exo-Terra 24x18x12

Have you considered pac man frogs or tomato frogs? THose are cool, as well a trio firebellied toads maybe.

Those are all great suggestions besides a Pac man frog they will take a chunk of meat out your hand if you hold them or chubby frogs will be cool as well

Leopard geckos are amazing! Just got mine (Legolas) yesterday and I can already see his unique personality! I would recommend them for kids as well as they're easily tamed and as they get older, they get a bit calmer and slower. I also recommend a bearded dragon, ours is so chill and loves a bath when shedding!

I love it! I'm making my kids do all their research before we pull the trigger but I'm on board. Where did you get yours? I'm leery of pet stores but not sure where else to go.

I got mine from a family run pet store which is in pontefract West Yorkshire, they have a very well run store. I agree when it comes to pet stores, I usually get my animals from breeders like my chinchillas but Ponte Pets is a very good establishment! They're are many breeders about the country I'm sure if a bit of googling is involved!

These are my twothere super nice and very calm. I may end up getting some more if I can find adults for a reasonable price since they live in a 55g

If you're getting more than one, it's recommend that you get only females as males may stress females by constantly trying to breed.

Ok, so the next pet I would get before another fish tank is a leopard gecko. Here are some questions...

1. How much will this cost me
2. How many Geckos should I get?
3. What to feed?
4. I need all the info I can get!

Thanks!

Cost depends what type of tank you're getting and where you're getting the gecko from. I presonally like the 40 gallon exoterra for my leos.

Only get 1 gecko, if you end up with males they will fight

Feed live insects (crickets, mealworms, waxworms, dubia roaches)

Keep a small bowl of calcium in the tank so they can eat it as they please (still dust food every few days with calcium). I wouldnt use sand in their tanks, I normally use eco earth or carpet for mine

And make sure you research as much as you can! These little guys can get lots of health problems if kept poorly! They can also live 10+ years

I like the tangerine morph.
Do I have to cycle water?

You not need to cycle their water. I just use a small water dish with Reptisafe as a conditioner

Id recommend watching some videos on Youtube by "Leopard Gecko" she has very educational videos on their health, behavior, tank setups, heating needs and how to feed them

1. It cost me about $150 for my Leopard Gecko
2. I got one and he seems just fine
3. I feed mine crickets, dubia roaches, dried mealworms, and occasionally superworms

Well, I have 2 juveniles.I have a Jungle Mack Snow Leopard and an Albino Banded Rainwater. They’re both amazing. I actually just got the Albino today. I believe the jungle Mack is female and the Albino is male, but they’re only 5” right now. They’re each in 20H tanks for the time being. Some people say a 10 gallon is fine for them, but they get 8-12 inches long, so I think a 24” by 12” footprint should be the minimum while they do better in even larger enclosures. My male will be moved into a 20L when he gets older if he is indeed male. I feed my guys live crickets, live mealworms, and dried mealworms right now with BSFL and Dubia roaches being added when I can find some quality ones. I would definitely recommend feeding BSFL (Black Soldier Fly Larvae) though. Dubia Roaches are also good due to their meat to shell ration. You also need to dust their food with a Calcium +D3 supplement. One thing I will suggest though is getting a tank with a decent height to it. The geckos won’t use all that height, but it helps prevent cricket escapes if you decide to go that route.

I put together a little list of the needed supplies. I’d guess it would run you about $100 to set up an enclosure (keep in mind I am in Tennessee though) and then the gecko itself could cost anywhere for $15-$250. I happened to already have a heating pad, 20g, lid, clay, etc when I made mine.

I’m just coming on here to say that you should never ever use a normal heat mat from Walmart as a means to heat your reptile enclosure. That’s extremely dangerous and reckless to even suggest, but I’m not trying to be rude in anyway possible. Heat pads cause nearly 2,000 burns and around 8 deaths per year. That’s not including the amount of house and hospital fires they cause.

I would instead suggest using a heat light (emits light and heat) or ceramic heat emitter (emits just heat) for your leopard gecko with a rock or tile situated underneath so they can bask on it for belly heat. You could even use a heat mat made for reptiles but I think the heat light or ceramic heat emitter would be the safer and easier choice. Either way I would use a thermostat with whatever you choose to keep your temperatures stable. I use Zilla brand thermostats but you can find them at Lowe’s for chicken coops.

I’ll include a picture of what can happen when you don’t regularly check your heating elements or have a thermostat running with them. This is a heat mat that the owner didn’t have a thermostat for. They didn’t notice this until they cleaned the tank; notice the burns on the wood dresser. This could’ve killed the owners’ reptile but also could’ve burned down her home. This reptile keeper learned her lesson and thankfully shared it so others can learn from her mistakes as well
