hey guys I'm setting up a reef aquarium soon. the size is still to be determined but I know for sure I want to go led for the lighting. I was looking at a couple including the marineland double bright and reef capable. I recently found this I was wondering if someone could tell me if its good or not. I have never heard of it before. also any other suggestions for lighting would be helpful. Thanks!

Well, LEDs are the new thing when it comes to reef lighting. It really depends on whether you are going to have soft or hard corals. This light has a lot of LEDs in it, which is nice so you are probably going to get a lot of watts out of it. But lets see what other people think.

I don't have a reef setup, but I would be leery about that fixture linked for corals. The led's people use in DIY, are around 1W each led. That entire fixture is 23W per the details. They seem to really push the shimmer and colors you will see vs the benefits to your livestock.

Unfortunately I can't help pick a ready made one, but I would search for a higher output led fixture. I would search some of the forums dedicated to reef setups as I have seen plenty of DIY and "what led system?" topics when I was looking to do this for a Freshwater planted. It is essentially the same concept. If you are looking for a FO, almost any system would work as you are just simulating day/night. When you have stock that rely on that light to live, it gets a little more complicated.

Good Luck,

I can't get on the site right now, as I am at school, but I know Kensfish.com has some new LED light strips and I believe one of them is for saltwater. They also have the Marineland LED's, but I don't think they would be very good for a reef tank.

This thread is a couple of months old.

Being the OP has not returned to it, there's no sense in dredging it up.

Go with AI SOL blue led lights, I have 4 on my 210 reef mix and they work great.

As stated by Lucy - this is an old thread and the OP has probably got the answers he/she needed.
