Hey everybody so I am leaving to Florida and I live in georgia this will be on Friday afternoon and I'm pretty sure we will return Sunday and I was wondering how long would my fish be ok and fine and should I feed them as much as I can or should I just throw in a algae wafer before I leave Friday afternoon
Tank size:20 gallon
3 corys
1 kuliI loach
4 neon tetras
1 goldfish that I will try and donate this week
1 small dojo loach that will also be rehomed once bigger

No, don't overfeed because they will poop, and have a waste build up.
Feed the normally before leaving, and they will totally fine for a few days.

Feed them friday afternoon and they will be fine until next Friday, they are good at conserving food for long stints

If you were going to do a water change do it and don't worry a weekend away will not hurt your fish. Title had me scared. Lol. Anymore than like 10 days you should have someone stop by to feed them.

Two or three days if longer I would maybe use a automatic feeder of some sort. Just my thought and opinion. Thank You

  1. Get a vacation feeder and fill the compartments with the correct food for your fish. The feeder will automatically release food into the water according to a schedule that you program into it.
  2. Put feeder fish of varied sizes in the tank.
  3. Use a feeder block.
  4. Have someone come over and feed your fish.

Don't worry I go away for 2 weeks every year and only have someone come in on about the 9th or 10th day and feed once and have never lost a fish.

A weekend is nothing, and definitely stay away from those feeder blocks. They will do nothing but overfeed some fish, cloud the water, and some, if not most of the food may rot.
I've gone two weeks without feeding.
Just go on vacation and have a good time and don't think twice about your fish.

And please don't use those weekend feeder blocks they will pollute your water. They are one of the aquarium inventions I wish would just go away.

Why do they pollute because the flakes don't break up finer? Does it come out as powder? Just curious. The link I posted was from another site but this information is nice to know that way I won't use one either in the near future.

I must definitely won't I remember about a couple of months ago my grandpa used it for his chiclids and the food became damp and stuck to the automatic feeder and never came out unless forced out

They usually dissolve much faster than the fish eat from it. It would be like you overfeeding your fish 4-5 times a day.

I just went on vacation for a total of 9 days and my fish were perfectly fine when I got home. It's a heavily planted tank, and I did a large water change the day I left, gave them a normal feeding and went on my way. Lights were on a timer and when I got home they were hungry, but no losses. You'll be fine.

I think it depends on your fish. If they are young they probably need food more often.

I think my fish can't fast, when I feed less my BN pleco start attacking my cichlids

Agree with this. I have been out of town most of the past month and my fish were only fed a couple times during the first two weeks. Adults were fine, but hundreds of fry and adolescents clearly stunted growth. 95% of them survived. If you have fish that will eat vegetables a bit of cucumber or squash helps delay the fast.

All that said, a long weekend is nothing and I wouldn't stress it at all..

Ive been keeping fish my whole life. Over 40 years. Weekends are NOTHING! We take week long trips a few times a year and again, no worries. If I'm leaving my fish for more than 2 weeks, I have someone come in and feed them once a week. Ive never lost fish due to them not being fed for a week. I ALWAYS do a good water change the morning before I leave for a week or longer, or the day before if I have to. Do NOT worry about leaving fish for a weekend.

Longest my fish went without eating was 2 weeks. Came back fish were perfectly healthy. The only loss were a few dried up shrimp. My only guess was they jumped out when the fish started to turn on them.

Since I'm leaving today in the afternoon I was wondering do I turn off my fish tank light or leave it on since I will be gone for 2 days should I just leave the blinds open beside my tank or just turn off the light and let it be dark
Help and advice appreciated

In the future, a timer is really convenient for times when you are away (a timer is even convenient when you are home). In this case, I agree that I would leave the light off for the two days. Letting some natural light into the room is a great idea.
