I'm setting up more apisto tanks and want to use some leaves [dried], the only leaves I have here are maple, lg. and sm. oak and Catawba leaves. Should I stay away from any of these? Would one work better than any other?

Never used any of those myself, I stick to Indian almond & banana leaves but I have heard of people using dried oak leaves.

I get all mine from Tannin Aquatics. I absolutely love them. They actually have an apisto pack with all sorts of goodies in it. My guys love it.

I am interested in using Oak leaves plenty of them where I live in the parks etc. I have read the benefits but my question pertains to how many to put in a 10 gallon tank with a pr of Apisto's and then the next question how long do you leave them in before you take them out and put a new batch in??

I’ve used oak leaves, then I got tired of the look so I trashed them in my main tank. In my shrimp tank they were in there for many months before they were finally eaten.

Well okay but not an answer. Did the oak leaves have any effect of the fish good or bad?

That was an answer. I’ve used them, if there were I’ll affects I would’ve said. You’re welcome. Also, my “answer” was for the OP...

I cannot read minds but I asked a question you responded and it did not clearly state one way or another. You wrote you used them did not like the look trashed them. I might have read it wrong but to me it was not clear. My apologies if you took it wrong.

As I said above I've never used oak but I use Indian almond & banana leaves all the time, I put in 6 at a time (5 foot tank), they float for a while & then sink to the substrate, I only move them if they fall on my plants but otherwise I let them lie & become leaf litter where they fall, I don't remove them I just let them decompose to nothing over time. It's difficult to quantify benefits but I have witnessed my shrimp munching on them & hiding under them & I've never had any issues with water quality from using them, my parameters remain stable.

Thanks I have read several articles explaining the benefits of sing certain leaves but could not find any on how many to put in a tank and for how long. Fall is coming soon I will have a big supply of Oak leaves.

The only thing I would add is that if you use a lot of them it turns your water the colour of tea as they release tannins into the water but that's supposed to have anti-bacterial qualities so as long as you're cool with the water being stained I'd say go for it.

Well okay but not an answer.
This is the part that I took as rude, my apologies if I was snappy, it was a long day and I probably shouldn’t have been on a forum. Lol, sorry. There were no affects on my fish or water parameters, good or bad.
