I just learned that fish "sleep." How long should I keep L.E.D. lights on with out annoying or irritating them? Also my hood has a blue light switch that is significantly dimmer and intended for night time. What I've been switching to the blue light at night. Is it bad keeping any light on 24/7 bad?

I ran a very dI'm "moonlight" for a while over one of my tanks, but I'd only have it on for maybe an hour or so after the regular tank lights went off; a timer turned it on an hour or so before the regular lights came on.

My fish got very nearly as much sleep as I did. They'd be without lights from about 10:30 to about 5 or 5:30.

Can you plug your night lights and tank lights in separately? Having them on separate timers is pretty convenient.

There is a switch on my hood that can turn on the blue lights as well the regular lights. So I can't do that, but would it be okay if I left the regular lights on all day?

Depending on how much light the tank lights put out, you may be asking for algae problems by leaving the regular lights on all day. Mine just run for maybe 6-8 hours.

I can't really answer about leaving the nightlight on all night. I don't know how bright your light is. I'd suggest sneaking into the room in the middle of the night and seeing if any fish are swimming around. If they're active, they may not be able to sleep with the light on. Probably they're ok though.

I have seen the guppies sleeping under the nightlight.
Don't snails eat the algae though?

They can. Depending on your snails, they might be able to keep it in check.

Welcome to Fishlore!

Like what was posted above. As long as the blue only led's are the moonlights, there is usually just a couple (2-4 typically) of them depending on the fixture size. These are intended to simulate the moon so they should be OK left on all night.
