5 Gallon Tank Kuhli loach problem

arandomturtle

hey guys i need help,i ordered a kuhli loach and a pussilus, they arrived today and the pussilus is ok but the kuhli is kinda lazy,he doesnt move when i try to find him,he doesnt have a pale color, breathes slowly, the water is clear but i dont have a testing kit. So what do you guys think ? Hes sick or he is just adaptating in the tank ?
He has peacefull tank mates the only one agressive that is not that agressive is the tiger barb, Any suggestions ?

bermese2002

he doesnt move when i try to find him

What do you mean by this? I'm pretty sure most people would recommend a group of Kuhli loaches as it makes them more comfortable.

How long has the tank been set up? Is it cycled?

It would be worth getting a testing kit if you can afford one - it's hard to say what's going on in the tank if you can't test the parameters

Is there any reason you want him to hide?

When you say he isn't scared at all, do you mean he doesn't move away from you at all when you approach him in the tank? Is he eating alright?

I'm afraid I don't know what a pussilus is, and a google search hasn't helped. Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge will answer soon.

As you've only just added the kuhli loaches, I would try and leave them alone to settle into the tank a bit instead of disturbing them.

Do you have a picture of the tank? What size is it? What's your maintenance schedule like?

I would definitely try and order a test kit online if you're struggling to find one in a shop.

What is the gravel like? Is it smooth? I only ask because Kuhli loaches have sensitive bellies and sand is softer for them. They also like to burrow through it I find.

Can you tell us more about the tank? How big is it? Is it heated? How many fish, and what kind of fish do you have?

He is new so I would just wait a little longer. Like others said they need to be in a larger group. I have 5 and very rarely see them at all except during water changes. They all come out to play.

Kuhli loaches thrive in large schools, the largest school you have room for is the best, think 12+ if you want to see them out in the open. but 5-6 should be considered bare minimum.
Stressed fish are unpredictable, its one thing to check if they are alive, but i would not force a fish to move.

The gravel is not so rough but, about the tank its pretty big i sent you a photo, basicly only tetras in the tank, and other vivipars,it used to have sanitar fish but an ancistrus gave birth and somehow they got bloat and i moved all sanitar fish including the kuhli there was 2 and after 3 weeks one of em died,so i moved the other one back, and now thus one i ordered is kinda lazy but woke up this morning he is okay i mean alive he is staying on top of the filter so cute no signs of diseases

I'm glad he seems better this morning.

Can you give specifics for the size of the tank? Either the measurements, or how many litres or gallons it is?

Can you give specifics on fish species and numbers?

That many fish neeed a tank more then double that size, A 40 gallon long, 48 inch long, 121 centimeter long. might be enough for the fish you have but if you were to bring all the species into even minimum size schools, you would need an even larger tank. maybe a 75 gallon.
Kuhlie loaches need a bare, BARE minimum of 6 in a school.
Tiger barbs need a Bare minimum of 6
Tetras need a bare minimum school of 6 per species

Tiger barbs get more aggressive with age, and more rambunctious. It needs to be in a school of 12 or so, or it will "play" rambunctiously and actively with the more laid-back species.

The kuhli is more better than this morning,he begun to move from places, breathes more faster, still skinny but he bit to worms, i just fed them i hope he eats leftovers or some worms,i hope hes not gonna jump off to swordtail babies, that i did not catch,i hope i catch him in a good posture of his neck to check for ulciors....and do not worry about the tiger barb he is 3 years old and bred once but the eggs were eaten too fast,so yeah, 3 years and he killed just 2 fish like half a year, they were fighting but no problem now,he guards newborn babies and escorts them to the net keeping the other fish away , he is very smart this is the only fish with a name given by me,enough about him lets talk about the kuhli he is finer than this morning,he havent met his "brother" but he avoids hiding and nobody attacks him,he

I have to agree with Noroomforshoe, there are just far too many fish in there for a 14g tank, and that's before you take the babies into account as well.

With that many fish, in unsuitable sized schools, you're going to continue to have issues due to stress and likely poor water conditions unfortunately.

i hope i catch him in a good posture of his neck to check for ulciors....

I'm not sure what you mean by this?

sorry i would buy like hundreds of tanks, and lots of bigger tanks but im kinda not so wealthy so i studied got my school money kept studying and again money and boom bought 2 tanks, one the "big" tank and 2 the small tank where are the babies and the cleaning crew except the kuhlis, yes i know,i still need to buy a bigger tank but i dont have a choice, plus i plan to sell some of them for money, luckly my fish x breed and breed, for example my guppy bred with a swordtail and my ancistrus bred a pleco and a corydoras catfish but they got bloat the babies and the female,so pretty sure im gonna make 50 dollars selling 20 fish.... but i have a small house too and i cant get a bigger tank plus my parents wont let me. So got no choice, i shut down the lights so now its his time to shine. And the babies dont stay in the big tank. But now somebody with knowlege about dermogenys pussilus, any advice about growing ?

I'm pretty sure those fish can't crossbreed, unfortunately, as they're different species.

I would make sure not to buy anymore fish then, if you can't afford a bigger tank at the moment.

I know I made the same mistake when I started out with a 15g (similar size to your bigger tank), but we all learn from it.

I think it would be worth figuring out which fish are suitable for your 14g and then rehoming the rest so that the ones you have left can thrive in there. I don't know about all your fish, but a quick google will help you identify which fish are happy in a 14g and which aren't.

Once you've figured that out, you just need to decide which ones you prefer and keep some suitable sized schools of them. Because, unfortunately, with that size tank you won't be able to keep a large variety of fish long term or happily.

If you like, I can have a google myself and see which of your fish are suitable and which aren't, and we can figure out a good stocking plan?

I freeze my bloodworms into a freezer, and when they need to eat them, I get a plastic container, get some water, and put the bloodworms there, until they get soft. It takes like a minute.

If you can, you want to return some fishes, or sell them. You can sell fishes here in fishlore too!

Since you have a lot of fishes now, do frequent water change, add plants for the fishes to hide. (I don't recommend adding decors, such as caves because it takes space and can get overcrowded) However upgrading your tank is highly recommended so, keep studying and good luck!

Since they're all schooling fish, I would only keep 2 kind of schooling fish. If I were you, I would do neons and kuhli loaches with 6 or more each.
I like to use Aqadvisor when I'm trying to stock my aquariums, and discuss it here. So my tank won't be overstocked.

Anyways, good night for you and good luck!

I'm in the UK, so it's starting to get late here too, but I've done a quick google for you.

It looks like the tiger barb, swordtails and halfbeak aren't suitable for your tank size as they just need more space. Also, I can't tell from your tank but it looks like it doesn't have a lid and apparently halfbeaks are notorious jumpers.

As darkcat said above, I would do one top dwelling school, the guppies, and the kuhli loaches. So you're stock would be:

2 guppies (although suggested ratio is at least 2 females to each male)
6 neon tetra OR 6 Tetra glow OR 6 black phantom tetra
6 kuhli loach

You would then want to keep your temperature between 24-26 degrees.

In terms of the tank, adding some live plants would help with water quality and also give your fish somewhere to hide.

Also, re the swordtails and guppies crossbreeding - https://drguppy.com/can-guppies-breed-with-swordtails/

A simple plant that you can either plant in the gravel or let float is Hornwort.

Regarding the fish, if I were you I’d decide which fish you were going to keep and then sell the others for now. It’ll ease the load on your tank and then, when you’re ready, you can start getting the numbers right.

Which fish are your favourites in the tank right now?

Regarding the halfbeak, I don’t think there’s a minimum age for jumping, so it would be best to provide a cover for the tank just to be on the safe side.
