20 Gallon Tank Kuhli Loach Behaviour

I just got six Kuhli Loaches for about eight days now, and they all seem to acting fine. Though I gotta say, one of them is super hyper, I don't know whether to worry or not. It's super adventurous compared to the others but super jumpy as well.

Anyways, I was feeding the fishes in the tank today, and one of them came up to feed as well? Is this normal behaviour? Or are they starving down there? I crush Megafin Flakes and turkey blast it to the substrate (my neon tetras won't let a single fish food get to the ground), and occasionally bloodworms too.

Is that normal? I was really surprised seeing my kuhli loach dart to the surface to feed with hyper neons and "big" honey gouramis. And after a bit another Kuhli Loach joined in too, the others remained on the substrate foraging.

Edit: It was kind of pale too, but I think that's because of the lightning. My parameters are 0.25ppm ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 10ppm of nitrates. I took this right after feeding them so I think the ammonia is fine. Today was the 50% water change too so the ammonia should be barely traceable now.

 

In all honesty when it comes to kuhli there is no normal behavior however that 0.25 ammonia is not going to be agreeable with them. While I find them to be hearty fishes when well cared they have a low tolerance to diseases and ammonia.

I've had very shy kuhli and out going kuhli as well as hyper kuhli and very quite kuhli. If you are very quite and observe them at night i think you will find most if not all of them are hyper during the night frequently spending hours glass surfing.

One last comment a hungry fish will be much more aggressive towards food so i suspect if he is going to the surface to eat then they were under-fed during shipment to the store or while at the store. Once he puts on a bit of weight I suspect he will spend less time going to the surface to eat but in all honesty as i noted above their short term and long term behavior is a bit unpredictable. One good thing about having an 'outgoing' kuhli is unlike some other fishes i find that kuhli are just as likely to learn from the bold one as the shy one where as with other fishes they usually adapt the shy/cautious one behavior.

Ahh, thank you! I don't know why, but my Kuhlis are the opposite of what I've read. My Kuhlis are not active at night at all, I went to watch them at night, but all they did was stay under decors and plants; barely moving too.
But at day they're foraging out but always near a hiding spot. And as mentioned earlier, one is just outgoing.

As for the ammonia, I did a water change and they're all back to normal. Bold in colour too! Maybe I should feed them more? I give them like 4-5 crushed up flakes, but then the gouramis/tetras may be eating them.

I'm just worried about the invasive snails. I heard they're only a problem when overfeeding, and currently a lot of them is showing up. So I'm being cautious, but at the same time, I don't wanna starve my fishes.

mine always climb near to the top and wriggle while the food falls and they try to catch it, if theres a leaf they may rest on it as well. hyper all the time.

Awww that's so cute XDDD only one of my kuhlis does it, but they hang on my hornworts like they're jungle snakes XDDD
