Krylon fusion is not aquarium safe paint.

I was going to make my own spray bar so I started looking for aquarium safe paint. I searched and a lot of ppl recommended Krylon fusion so I emailed them to see if it was truly aquarium safe and here's their response.

Hello Wendy,

Thank you for contacting Krylon.

Unfortunately, we do not recommend any of our products to be applied below the water line. None of our products are immersion-rated or waterproof. Our products may last for a time under water, but there is no guarantee as to how long the will hold up.

Additionally, we have nothing that is FDA approved, which is important in terms of ingestion. Our products may harm the aquarium life.

I wish you the best of success with your search for a compatible product. Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Regards,

Daniel
Krylon Product Support

I did find this paint that is indeed aquarium safe but it's $81, to expensive for me to just do a spray bar. This is the company Pentair Aquatic Eco-Systems and here's their site if anyone is interested.

I have researched that before as well. I have read where many people have used Krylon Fusion with good success. I think Krylon doesn't want to say that its ok, as they may get sued or for other legal reasons. The only bad things I read about was that after time the paint would have small flecks come off of plastic stuff. Nothing terrible just over a year or so, and not in any large amounts. From what I read they recommended sanding the plastic a lot to "rough" it up some to better hold the paint. And to let it dry for several weeks before submerging. Try this at your own risk, but many have used it and it has not killed their tank inhabitants.

I personally used it on a DIY light stand that isn't submerged but gets splashed sometimes and it is great after a year or so. But this is a bit different then submerging.

Describe your spray bar project and maybe we can help with some alternate ideas. Like finding some black tubing and making a new spray bar.

Needed 12mm hard plastic PVC pipe and it only comes in white. Want it painted black. I kinda get what your saying about them not wanting to be sued but if their products were actually safe they would say so. So what I'm trying to say is if someone tried to use their product for an application it's not intended for that would be the consumers fault. Now on the flip side of that you have a company that actually states it's aquarium safe and your tanks inhabitance die due their product you can take legal recourse against that company.

As for Krylon, they probably didn't want to invest the money in all the research and tests needed to prove it would be safe for aquariums. And like you said, if they claim it to be safe, and someones fish dies, there would be a lawsuit they want to avoid. I'm sure you already have, but google "krylon fusion aquarium safe" and there is a lot of info about it.

As for your project, could you possibly use some flexible tubing held in place by suctions cups. Maybe check out intake tubes of various filters like HOB's and see if you could use one of them and modify to your needs somehow. Most companies sell replacement intake tubes for their HOB filters. Check out bigalspets.com they have a lot of replacement parts and good customer service, you could call them to check measurements.

Also, maybe there is some way with an adapter to attach a different sized PVC tube that you can find in black or gray. I have seen a few different PVC pipes in gray before (at least a little better then white, maybe). Like a reducer or enlarger adapter to attach the tubing from filter to the spray bar.

This last idea could be crazy, but may be possible....3D printers are much more common now, maybe someone could make a spray bar for you. I think I remember someone on this forum saying they had one and they were wanting ideas for making some tank decorations. They could maybe make a cylinder and then you bore out the inner tube, and drill holes for the spray.

Also trying googling "spray bar (your filter)". or maybe at "DIY" to the search. There are people that have made custom spray bars for just about every filter there is. Just some thoughts, hope that helps.

This is for my Eheim classic canister and it came with a spray bar but not long enough to go across the area I want it to. I did think about plastic tubing, thanks.

You can get black PVC pipe at Home Depot or Lowes it's in the water sprinkler parts section and is a little more expensive than regular white PVC pipe.

Maybe try to get a replacement spray bar and somehow attach it to the end of the original spray bar. Some aquarium safe silicon and a connector piece should do the trick.

I would use Rust-oleum. Its waterproof and shouldn't chip or flake.

N/P I didn't know about it till I helped a friend fix the sprinkler system in their yard. It is safe to be used in tanks. I was going to use it on my reef tank for the overflow and return but ended up just being cheap and using white PVC. LoL

I also looked in to this and it's about $15 for another Eheim spray bar. Just trying to go the cheaper route.

Krylon fusion is completely safe and nobody should have any doubts about it, Its been used for many years and like dolfan said the company can't say its safe for aquarium just like a lot of the silicones we use as well as many other products, If there not made for aquariums then the companys will not say its safe, Even though it is, So please nobody have second thoughts about krylon at all.
