King betta?

So I bought a new betta at Petco today (I know, sue me. Mine is actually not bad. ) I didn't think to take a picture of him in the cup and he's only been in the tank for like 15 minutes so he's hiding and that will have to wait. I'll toss a pic up when he comes out. He was labeled as a "king betta". I liked his colors and I remembered seeing a very large king betta in the past so that appealed to me. My question is this:

What does "king betta" mean? I've seen four different answers in my research. They're just plakats that happen to be large, that they're imbellis instead of splendens, they're giant bettas, or that they have giant betta blood but not true giants.

Does anyone know the truth?

Edit: look who decided to show himself for a minute.

From what I’ve read they’re just bettas that were specifically bred to be larger. I haven’t looked into it all that much but that’s what I found.

That does seem like the most likely answer, I agree. But I came across so many different answers it was pretty surprising.

Thanks! I saw so many cool color combos and was honestly planning to go with something other than blue. But this guy immediately drew my attention and I kept going back to look at him.

Nothing wrong with buying at Petco at all. I do it all the time. Just need to use more caution when doing so.

I know this is a very old thread so don't bash me for it but..."King" bettas are also known as Half-Giants. There are 5 body plans for B. splendens; standard, dwarf, half-giant, giant and short body. "Giant" doesn't necessarily refer to the species - it also refers to the variety. Giant bettas are just that - B. splendens selectively bred to be larger than normal. I won't get into the others (that's a whole different story), but I hope this helps :)
