Keeping Betta With Neon Tetras

I have read a lot about the betta tank mates and found out that neons are quite compatible but I remember, when I was younger, my dad brought some neons and the moment he introduced them to our betta tank, it easily munched one up. Which is why I have a bad memory of both of them being kept together.

It's hit-or-miss. Some bettas are extremely aggressive and can't tolerate tankmates, while some don't really care about their tankmates.

Is there a question here? If you are thinking about trying it, it does depend a lot on the individual betta. I actually just added black neon tetras to my bettas tank last night. He followed them around like a puppy an when he got a little too forward they darted away. I got 12 to start, and that has also helped keep any one from being targeted. Now, 12 or so hours later, he's pretty chill, seems to be ignoring them 75% of the time and it hasn't even been a full day.

Every fish will be different. My betta, Bruce, is currently-as I type and has been for the last week- peacefully schooling with 3 of my pregnant (early pregnancy) guppies. I don't get it. He seems to adore them....for now.

Bettas should not be kept with neons since they are not temperature compatible. Bettas need 78-82f, neons need 68-75f.

As for behavioural compatibility it depends on the individual fish. An adult betta is not capable of eating adult neons though. I generally wouldn't recommend any other mid dwelling fish with a betta since bettas can get very stressed with other fish on their territory.

Yes I was hoping to keep them in the same tank but now I think I shouldn't otherwise.

Thanks for the info In other words, bettas are a lone wolf kind of a fish So better leave it be.

There's a chance of small fish nipping the Betta's fins, also.

If I wanted small fish in with my Betta I would try Cardinals or Harlequins. I have done this before successfully. I also kept my Betta with African Dwarf Frogs. The tank was 14 gallons Hexagon.
