so I have a 2.5 gallon and I was thnking why not get a betta there so cool. then I though of those tiny filthy cups they come in and I was thnking wuld it be terrable to have a male and a female in 2.5 gallons? its still cycling so I'm not in any hurry for fishies in it but they look so cool in pairs. What does everyone think? I do have a divider just in case

I can tell you with almost 100% certainty that having a male and female betta together is bad news. Can't comment on the divider though, I'll let the experts handle that one

HI there,
I believe that a divided 2.5 tank would just be too small for two bettas. If you wanted a divided tank, you should get a 10 gallon tank for that. I have had a female betta in a 2.5 tank and she did fine and had plenty of room to swim around and was very happy. You won't want to add two Bettas together in the same tank, doesn't matter if its females or males they will fight with each other seriously. You can set up your 2.5 very nicely with one betta and it can look very nice.
Those terrible tiny cups are only there to hold the bettas in at the shops, since they really cannot be in the same tank with others of its kind.

it's hard to divide a 2.5g anyway.. if you divide a 10g, you might think about getting 2 smaller filters, 1 for each side and a flexible bubble wand to lie across the middle near the divider. the heater being near the middle would take care of the whole tank and each betta could have a happy environment.
