120 Gallon Tank just picked up my 120 gallon today

today I bought my 120 gallon tank. it was 300 dollars and came with tank, stand, fluval 300 watt heater, 2 cascade 700s, an aqueon water changer, a new test kit, T5HO lights, and glass hoods. I would be setting it up next week but my mom wants me to paint the trim and stand black :/ we will see if I can convince her wood isn't that bad looking. I know I'm taking off the ugly blue paint off the back. blue only works in saltwater IMO. ive gotta decide what bulbs I wanna use. it has an actinic and a midday 6000K. id like to grow dwarf sagitaria, amazon swords, anubius, vals, java fern, lilies, and floating plants. I don't know what will work with the parrots though. so far Pumpkin has only ate part of my lily plant. the stock will be
4-blood parrots
1-kirin parrot
10-congo tetras
2-senegal bichrs
I might put miracle grow under the substrate but is that a good idea with digging cichlids maybe I should just do root tabs. well I think that's it. ill update with pics as stuff happens. right now I'm just testing the tanks for leaks.

I would not put any soil under the gravel or sand. I'd keep the 6000k bulb and replace the actinic with something like a 10000k.

I like the stocking list.

Congrats on the find ;D pretty good price!

I've got Najas and Java moss with mine. I've never tried anything planted before with BP's lol. Try it and find out. I'd try just a few cheap plants at first.

What I do with the plants I keep in my BP tank is wrap them around tall fake plants. I can get a picture

Edit: Added a couple pictures of how I did mine. BP's don't tear anything up.

Good morning,

You may or may not have good luck with plants in a tank stocked with Bloody Parrots. My Bloody Parrots love Romaine Lettuce. I tried adding some Java Ferns to the 265g tank and between the Silver Dollars (being herbivores) and the Bloody Parrots too, the plants were devoured within 2 hours. Both fish eating the plants.

They may do well while the fish are small, but once they get larger, you could have more issues to develop.

Please keep us posted. Congrats on the new tank! I'll be looking forward to updates.

I wonder if theyre raised with plants then they won't do it. mines 6 inches now and he messes with the lilie plant but that's it and he just takes a bite every now and then. if they tear them up ill just change to plastic plants.

removed the blue paint drained the tank and put on a coat of black paint today. going to get rocks and sand tomorrow and put the rest of the coats of black on. ill probably set it up monday and move over the first fish a blood parrot, a kirin parrot, 2 senegal bichrs, and 3 congo tetras. gonna put my aquaclear 70 on to seed it.
would this work for stocking?
3-blood parrots
1-kirin parrot
10-congo tetras
2-senegal bichrs
2-cutterI cichlids(kind of like convicts but less aggressive).

decided on that black "sand" you can get at tractor supply for my sunstrate.

I have young parrots and plants. I don't know what will happen in future. They like hanging out in the amazon swords. So far digging up roots has been experienced, but moved pot and no big deal. I only have 1 digger so far, the confirmed female.

That is a great deal you got.

I'm going to try rocks too. I find my female only digs where I place her pot. I plant around it now.

should I put eggcrate under the black sand? I plan on a lot of large rocks.

That's a personal choice. I like the safety it provides if the rocks fall.

how many sheets would I need? the tank is 48in by 24in by 24in. I can decide if I want to put a row of rocks in the back going the whole length or a couple of ranomly placed rock stacks and caves arohmd the tank.

so today I painted the back of the tank. it mighr need another coat or two. I also have the rocks cleaning. got the canisters set up too. plan on getting eggcrate tomorrow and aquascaping then adding the substrate and water. gonna seed the tank with media from my aquaclear 70. gonna start with my congos then slowly add the rest.

I'm horrible w/ square foot calculations. I'd bring those measurements to the hardware store and compare to a sheet of egg crate.

Are you stacking the rocks against the glass?

how should I add these fish? I really don't want to rescape the tank ever. decided to go back to the original stocking
4-blood parrots
1-kirin parrot
10-congo tetras
2-senegal bichrs
I think the cutterI would really tear up my plants. I hope they will leave the plants alone. I really want the dwarf sagitaria and some amazob swords. should I replace the actinic? I don't want algae and I don't want the plants to die either.
