Just Ordered An Aqueon Versalid

When I got my 40G breeder, I bought a hood with a light that fits perfectly, but 6 inches remains uncovered in the back of the hood. So, I had cut a piece of soft plastic to cover that area but I could never get it to stay on. I spent 2 hours this past weekend, measuring, making a thing for the back out of plastic canvas and wood ice cream sticks tied on with zip ties, and it still falls in the tank. Drives me nutso. So, I just bought this in 36 inches by 18 inches, because it seems I can take the light off my hood and just set it on this glass lid. I hope I am right, but it is the right dimensions and I can cut the plastic at the back to fit the tubes and what not coming into the tank. Does anybody have this on a 40G breeder and if you do, does it fit good?

I just got the smaller one for my 10 gallon from them, it fits fine. But it was so hard getting the plastic piece on, for some reason it isn’t attached, I had to use cooking spray. Lol. Then I had it upside down when I cut my openings so I had to swap my filter and heater positions to fit the holes.

I might get the 10 gallon one too some day because the hood that came with the 10G kit falls into the tank and there is only this little hole to put food in. This tank holds the puffers so I put m whole hand in to put the pest snails where I want them so the puffers find them, so I am always pulling the lid off. But then again, the hood that came with the kit only has this light thing attached to the inside of the hood, so not sure how I would attach that to the Versalid. I am glad you figured it out but I hope I do not cut it wrong.

Yeah sounds like I had the same hood on mine. So I bought that hood and a new light. Good luck!

I have to research what lights would fit on this tank. Can you show me what you bought if you don't mind for a light?

Hmm, that looks massive. You must have a very planted tank. I wonder if it would fit where I have it on a rack, so not sure how high it sits. But, does it block you opening the Versalid? It looks like it sits on the outside of the tank, but wonder if it is sitting on the part of the lid that has the hinge, would it block it from opening? I have plants in there so maybe it would help them grow faster, but seems like more than a newby like me can figure out.

Well they also make a less bright one but I wanted to add some tougher plants. I had to lessen the amount of time it’s on due to algae. I have it on a timer. It sits about 3-4” off the hood, you could take the adjustable legs off and just set it on the glass (it would still be an inch or so off)....I have it pushed way back somewhat touching my filter to keep it off the hinge but yes, it does open easy when put back far enough. It’s also easy to just set it aside during cleanings or when ever I want to get in there. I’ll try to get a pick or two for ya.

The light is off right now (timer) but here’s a couple shots of how it sits...I push it back further when I want the lid to stay open by itself, then I bring it back more centered when I’m done, if that makes sense.

Thanks. That looks like it would work well for me. Are all 10 gallons the same measurements, I have to measure mine, make sure it is not too long or too short. I keep my lights on pretty much when I am awake, the lights are on, so probably want something just a little bit less strong, so do not need a timer. Specially in the puffer tank, I love watching them.

If it’s just a standard 10 gallon it should be ok, this is adjustable 2-3” in length as well. And yay, puffers! Adorable!

If you don't need that much light, the Current USA LED (just the plain one) is a pretty good light. They're ~$30 on Amazon w/Prime free delivery. It fits low on the cover, barely an inch high and is only about 2 inches wide. Also easy to lift off if you need to take the whole glass cover off of the tank for some reason.
