So i just got some shells from the beach yesterday, i have 4 halves of young oyster shells, they have barnacles on them so i think im going to leave them out, but i do have what looks like the inner part of a conch shell, 2 snail shells, and what looks like a big jingle shell, i checked while i was at the beach and they're no living things on or in the shells, if i can use them for PH/hardness boosting how do i prep them to be put in the aquarium? they will be going in a Freshwater 10g that i have been having trouble keeping the PH/hardness up(both GH and KH)

Use a bleach unscented. Mix 1 to 5 bleach to water. Let the shells soak for an hour or so. Than place they in the sun to dry for a day or so. Rinse in water than add to tank.
What is your ph now and what fish are you looking to add. It’s always best to try and keep your fish at the tap ph. It’s better for fish to be at a stable ph than one that constantly need adjusting. Fish have problem with changing ph.

the PH doesnt go higher than 6.0-6.4(it fluctuates) and the General hardness is 0-20, and KH is 0 all the time, i already have fish, 3 marigold variatus, a female VeilTail betta, and a few endlers, my goal is to get the PH to 7.0-7.2 and keep it there, get GH to around 60-80 or more, and KH to 50 or more. i am trying to get the KH up to help with the fluctuating PH, and other things. i know shells are very good for boosting KH.

i just realised when i do a WC the PH boost will go away and the PH/GH/KH will be back down to where it was, which could stress the fish, i guess shells aren't going to work

Yeah that why I was asking. People do it. My guess is you have to raise your ph in the new water before you add it. How big is your tank? There are fish that do well in that low of a ph. Angels, tetras, discus. You may want to look into these types of fish. I know fish can adjust to higher phs but I think not so much to lower.

it is a 10 gallon so my options are limited, i am just trying to help the Marigold Variatus who are a type of platy, and the endlers, but if you see the post before i said i cannot use shells, because when i do a WC the PH/GH/KH will go back down to where it was from the start, so i will have to think of something else

No I did read your post. The shells will help the tank water stay at a higher ph. Now you have to add something to your new water. So you would have to age that water ina 5g bucket to raise the ph. Maybe just api ph up. Than when you add it to the tank the shells will stabilize it at your desired ph.
This is just an idea. But being it’s only 10g it’s a much smaller amount of water to work with and very hard to hit your mark. I would say if the fish look fine now just go with the way your doing it and don’t play with the ph.

Yea they are doing great, i always try to improve, if there is something i can do to help my fish i try to do it, but they aren't showing any signs of distress or anything like that, so i will leave things for now. Thanks for your help though.
