Ok so I did not plan on getting a black orchid betta - so I had black gravel already in the tank
No surprise , he’s hard to see and it doesn’t do him justice
Soooooo
New decor , colour , theme ideas anyone?

I have 2 x 5 gallon , and they are both kitchen tanks so need to look ok together still and not have one looking out of sorts.

Niko is a very bright red and torqouise Halfmoon and Kaido is a black orchid plakat.

Current tanks both in below photos

I have ornament coming to replace bridge in plakat tank- see photo below- but I’m nervous ThaI might get stuck in it so I’ll have to wait till I see it when it arrives.
I seem to have accidentally done natural brown shades and green plants in both
Maybe I just change Kaido’s black gravel to white gravel ?

EDIT: I have lights coming too - aqua one minI touch LED extendable 25cm-40cm 8w just for veiwing the fish easy and will be on 8 -10 hours a day to develop a day night awareness

I hate white substrate personally. I have a 5 gallon shrimp tank with white sand and it is my enemy. I think a sandy coloured sand (does that make sense?) would look good in the tank with the black betta.

Good point , I did wonder about that that it may be hard to keep looking good... I’ll look into the brownish shades

You said fun ideas right? Ok so I’m just going to go a little wild here.

What about chess themed tanks? The red bettas tank could be black chess and the black betta could be the white chess set. You could have some aquarium safe(not actual chess pieces) large chess pieces like the rook and knight.

An Alice and wonderland tank themes. The red betta could be in the mushroom area and the black one in the garden with the griffin and mock turtle.

A sky and underground theme. Have a blue sky background, white sand, some fake birds or plains or just thunder clouds(with darker sand). The red bettas tank could be with some aquaponic plants roots in with a brown substrate and rocks.

Beyond that you could still do black substrate but have more green plants and white stones scattered about. That way it isn’t just black and he’d still pop out some.

The smoothness on those should be fine for bettas and they look very similar to the ones I have in my tanks so I believe they’d be fine. Particularly since they’re sold for fish tanks.

Ok thanks maybe ill stick with black gravel and I’ll wait for the tree roots ornament to arrive and if it’s suitable use that as a centrepiece for the tank and plan around that. I tend to like resin ornaments that look like real pieces so I may remove the temple ornament and def remove the bridge once tree roots here.
If I have room I want to add one of the hollow logs like I have in Niko’s tank to Kaido’s tank too as Niko loves his and uses it heaps in a day.
Then between the tree roots, log tunnel and green silk plants I may not have much black gravel areas he will camouflage into to worry about anyway

I like white gravel with black/dark grey ornaments and bright green plants. It makes a really zen look. I also love the chess set idea!

The tree roots arrived but I’m assuming the holes etc would made it a betta getting stuck risk?

Time most of the holes look fine, the only one a betta might get caught in possibly would be the one to the left-ish. But I could still see a betta squeezing through it. I honestly wouldn’t be to concerned personally, but if any of the holes makes you to worried you can always stick a small piece of filter sponge in the hole. That way you block the betta from being able to get through, that’s what I’ve always done with my pots and it works well.
