So I’ve been trying to find the issue in my low-tech 29 gallon planted tank for months now because the plants (namely the jungle vals) began just to massively die off a couple months back out of seemingly nowhere. At first, I thought it was the water sprite at the top blocking too much light from the Vals (which I first put up there to block too much light from hitting my anubias) but even after trimming them and removing some the vals just continued dying. The leaves just basically melted off from the base at first, some turned brown from the top down and others just fell apart piece by piece like they been damaged. At the time when this started I was only dosing flourish three times a week with small doses of the recommended amount for a 10 gallon tank. When this all began I upped the dosage to every other day with no results then I upped it to the 15 gal equivalent every other day with no results. I have now reduced that to twice a week at half a cap full. Meanwhile my anubias started suffering due to the increase ferts and light from the trimmed water sprite. I started dosing potassium in the form of (Monopotassium phosphate) because I noticed GSA growing on the plants and anubis so I figured my K was low after doing some research. I started dosing at about 1 teaspoon everyday per the recommendations I found online to help control GSA growth and possibly help my vals make a comeback. After about a month I lowered the dose to every other day, then to every two days, and now to twice a week as I am seeing no improvement in the vals and I’m getting a lot of white buildup on my heater which I think is due to the Potassium. I trimmed several leafs off the anubis that were just too covered in algae and they seem to be doing fine besides that along with the water sprite which looks healthy and is growing at a good pace.
My regime and parameters are as follows at the current moment:
30% pwc Wednesdays and Sundays followed immediately by the addition of 1 teaspoon monopotassium phosphate and half a capful of flourish.
Then my parameters are:
0 ppm ammonia
0 ppm nitrite
10-20 ppm nitrate
7.4pH
7 Kdh
9 Gdh
I only dose flourish and potassium and some root tabs that I placed back when I first planted the tank and added a couple more when the vals started dying. The tank has a black gravel substrate and its been set up for about three years but only planted for a little over a year. Any suggestions as to what I should do next are welcomed because the plants are just not doing well right now. I did consider doing CO2 at one point but I think right now it’ll just complicate things. I’ll post some pics below of the before and now, please let me know any suggestions and what I should try next.
