Jungle Val Struggle

So I’ve been trying to find the issue in my low-tech 29 gallon planted tank for months now because the plants (namely the jungle vals) began just to massively die off a couple months back out of seemingly nowhere. At first, I thought it was the water sprite at the top blocking too much light from the Vals (which I first put up there to block too much light from hitting my anubias) but even after trimming them and removing some the vals just continued dying. The leaves just basically melted off from the base at first, some turned brown from the top down and others just fell apart piece by piece like they been damaged. At the time when this started I was only dosing flourish three times a week with small doses of the recommended amount for a 10 gallon tank. When this all began I upped the dosage to every other day with no results then I upped it to the 15 gal equivalent every other day with no results. I have now reduced that to twice a week at half a cap full. Meanwhile my anubias started suffering due to the increase ferts and light from the trimmed water sprite. I started dosing potassium in the form of (Monopotassium phosphate) because I noticed GSA growing on the plants and anubis so I figured my K was low after doing some research. I started dosing at about 1 teaspoon everyday per the recommendations I found online to help control GSA growth and possibly help my vals make a comeback. After about a month I lowered the dose to every other day, then to every two days, and now to twice a week as I am seeing no improvement in the vals and I’m getting a lot of white buildup on my heater which I think is due to the Potassium. I trimmed several leafs off the anubis that were just too covered in algae and they seem to be doing fine besides that along with the water sprite which looks healthy and is growing at a good pace.
My regime and parameters are as follows at the current moment:

30% pwc Wednesdays and Sundays followed immediately by the addition of 1 teaspoon monopotassium phosphate and half a capful of flourish.

Then my parameters are:

0 ppm ammonia
0 ppm nitrite
10-20 ppm nitrate
7.4pH
7 Kdh
9 Gdh

I only dose flourish and potassium and some root tabs that I placed back when I first planted the tank and added a couple more when the vals started dying. The tank has a black gravel substrate and its been set up for about three years but only planted for a little over a year. Any suggestions as to what I should do next are welcomed because the plants are just not doing well right now. I did consider doing CO2 at one point but I think right now it’ll just complicate things. I’ll post some pics below of the before and now, please let me know any suggestions and what I should try next.

I have a similar issue with a tank that is just over a year old. The Val is starting to look sad and has stopped growing. I have added some root tabs to see if it perks them up. Have you tried using a complete fertiliser?

Not yet no, I have been thinking about it but I would need to do some more research to figure out the dosing and all for mine.

Add some root tabs. I have jungle vals in eco complete and they're growing like a weed. They stopped growing at one point so I realized they ran out of root tabs and added more. Boom problem solved back to growing like crazy. They get their nutrients from the ground not from the water column. So liquid ferts will help a little as they settle into the substrate a little, but root tabs give the direct nutrients right there.

Would they still be able to use the nutrients from the root tabs in a gravel substrate though?

How long have the plants been in the tank?

I’d suggest stop using liquid ferts for a month. Keep doing water changes weekly. All those plants can be grown in plain gravel. Unless you have tell tale signs or a for sure way of knowing the deficiency you are wasting the fertilizer. Also can cause more of a headache with other issues.

I agree with above vals do like to root feed. If you are going to use fertilizer use root tabs for the vals

My Vals are crazy. I use root tabs for others but are close? To the Vals. I use a all in one fert. Thrive C for low light plants at 1/2 dose. They usually surge after a water change. I do 50%. Make sure the roots are close to the top of substrate.

They’ve been in the tank for a year now and went through the whole melting and coming back part already, I’ll try more root tabs and see if that helps. Do you think I should keep dosing potassium?

I think you should only do root tabs. Do weekly water changes. Wait a month to see what happens and go from there. You need a base point to start from, kind of like a reset on the tank.

In my experience I have grown all those plants with a very mediocre light from 29 gallon aquarium kit in plain gravel. Sure our water could be very different but they are very undemanding plants. Not trying to belittle you but keeping it simple sometimes is the best thing to do

I've been on vacation for 10 days I'm verrrrry curious on how much mine have grown. They can grow 3-4 inches some days! Lol

I'll post a pic when I get home.

I’ll give that a try then, I’ll stop using the other ferts for now and put some root tabs in tomorrow and see what happens in the next month.

Yes

Mine are in gravel. The ones in my sand aren't growing as fast IMO.
