Jungle Val Questions

HI I just received a order of jungle Val yesterday, and they came all broken up. How do I go about it? Do I cut them all off at the roots? Will they heal?

from my experience, they don't heal. you can trim the tops off but mine still get gross at the tipa when I do that.

i'd cut off whatever looks bad. this stuff grows quickly, so you should see new growth (new shoots, plus new plants from runners) soon.

Is it normal for jungle Val to melt after adding to aquarium? Mine is melting slowly but not alarmingly. Thanks

Was it grown out of water? If so then it’s normal

No I don’t think so I ordered it online so... but I think it was grown emersed..?

Sweet. Thanks. I gave it some root tabs but keeping the buggers planted is a trick.

Emersed is “out of water”. I don’t believe Val’s grow emersed, however, they often melt when water parameters are changed.

It's perfectly normal buddy mine did the same thing but they will grow new shoots n no time Ur bets bet is to just cut them off as close as u can get it to the substrate... That's what I did other wise it will melt off n away n ur water which is not too healthy for fish or plants.... Fish waste and uneaten food is bad enough if u ever see any leaves cracking or dieing cut them off and new ones will grow.. all my plants are doing great only plant I can't seem to grow is anacharis which is weird bc that's a fairly easy Hardy plant to grow and they usually grow fast .... I'm at a loss I have rotala and abunch of other harder plants to grow and their thriving... I'm changing my 29 gal into a 55 tomorrow so and buying plant substrate and gettin plant bulbs. Next week I'm buying a really good plant light that's like120 dollars and I'm guna buy plant food liquid instead of nourish tabs... I wish I could add co2 but I think I read I can't use co2 with German and electric blue rams for some reason I think it lowers the ph or something the rams really need to survive. I need to look it up n do some more research.

Jackson51 co2 will lower the ph, but only while it is in use. Often times we measure optimal levels by achieving a ph drop of 1. However, it does not actually CHANGE the ph itself, just causes it to be read differently (so there is no true ph swing), it a temporary reading while the co2 is on.
Not sure about rams and co2 specifically, sorry can’t help there.

Thanks for the reply better post pictures of the 55 gal when you’re done!

Too deep. The crown needs to be above the substrate. Use weights https://

No reason for weights. I have buried them with the crown in the substrate and it still did fine and shot runners. But yours is like way deep in there, lift it a little higher.

OP said that they keep coming up. If a plant will not stay at the proper planted depth weights eliminate the damage to the roots from constant replanting.

HI there, can I crazy glue jungle Val to small rocks and then bury them in substrate? How do I go about this..? Do I let the root fully dry or not? Any help would be appreciated thank you

I use the gel superglue and glue the plant to the object while everything is underwater. Superglue will skin over instantly on contact with water so its very safe.

So no need to let it dry?

As the previous poster said, you want to glue them with only GEL super glue. I'd recommend a quick-drying one.

I would advocate using lead free plant weights. I will try to post a link when I get home. They are not expensive. Also be sure to not bury the crown of the plant.

If you get it on your fingers acetone nailpolish remover gets it off!!

On the gel vs non gel, the gel just makes like easier. The big thing is to ensure its just cyanoacrylate.

Which lead-free weights have you found?
I wrap the roots in a bit of floss to cushion, and stuff it in these large bio rings, then bury the rings.

I posted a link in another thread (I forget) I got mine from Big Al’s but I think the big box stores sell them as well.

Thanks! I didn’t know that! That will spare some skin..

I have the original crazy glue and I’ve used it before. And it’s just cyanoacrylate. I think I got that right ...

Thanks! I found some at big als but I have glue on hand so I think I’ll try that first!

Will do! This is my 29 gal. Now! And my two of my electric blue rams bred already and had eggs! Pretty cool! Will post pics of the 55 soon! I just got it up and running but need to buy plants and rocks etc. And with my pending habit it will probably take 2 or 3 paychecks lol but well worth it! Let me know how Ur plants do. Add plant food liquid and co2 and a good light and possibly plant substrate and watch them grow! Lol

Thanks ! I just came home to more eggs! My German blue rams just laid eggs too!! My electric blue rams laid eggs last week in the same tank but the snails ran through them and killed them all the rest the parents ate! Smh... O well hard part is done now I have two breeding couples! One pair electric blue rams and one pair of German blue rams. I'm ecstatic! So excited ! I gotta move fish to my new 55 today asap! Hope the water ia good enough it should be as I took most the water from my good tank thts been up running for almost 7 months ans the water is dang near perfect. I checked the water in my new 55 and it looks good so I'm putting one female in today to see how she does before I put two more gbr's and 5 electric blue rams

Awesome man!!! Looking forward to seeing you in the buy/sell/trade forum!

Just an update.. I glued the plants to rocks and one has a one inch stem already so it might make it ... back when I started my aquarium I almost bought a couple rams but I went for a community tank instead. Maybe the next one

Is it possible to grow jungle Vals and dose excel? I quit dosing it when I got them but I’m seeing algae here and there so I’m wondering if it will hurt if I’ll dose like 1 ml daily? Will that even clear algae?
The tank is 36 gallons thanks.

I did a Google search for this specific question about two days ago. Granted, excel is a Seachem product, but Seachem’s website, in their customer service forums, I found a decent write up where they summarize some trials they did with excel and Vals.
They concluded that at recommended rates, vals will not show any lasting detrimental effects of Excel.
Their trials included a number of different species of vals, and three experimental groups including the recommended rate, double that, and a controll with no excel.
What they found was that when excel was initially administered, within a short period of time some of the vals (especially at the higher treatment rates) lost healthy leaves to melting. Seachem claims that where that occurred (again, higher than recommended rates) the plants responded with excellent regrowth, as typically occurs when plants melt after changing water parameters.
Although I am taking their findings with a grain of salt, their data makes me willing to try small doses of excel in my tank with vals, just to see what happens. If the plants are acclimated to excel slowly enough, starting with very low doses, one might not even see any melting.

Thanks for the info! So would you dose 1 ml daily or is that to often?

Don’t have the rate handy. Whatever the label says, I’d start with half that for say 4 weeks. Then full rate.
