Joining the Goldfish club

I’ve been thinking about a goldfish for a while! I just lost a few bettas (one to old age and a sick fish because of a strict covid quarantine) I’ll post more about that elsewhere.

Anyways so now I have the space because I was able to Move some fish around.I went and purchased a goldfish from PetSmart . The fish was in with the fantails but has the bump on its head like the Oranda. I will post a photo soon. Didn’t look like a fantail. I didn’t really ask I just wanted to get in and out. He /she has a scale hanging off it’s head. Maybe they shift the fish because of bullying or maybe the fish was one someone gave up, who knows I just hope it’s healthy enough to live a long life. Most of my experience is with bettas. Had goldfish as a kid but they never lived (we didn’t know what we were doing then) any tips are appreciated!

You don't need a heater, they like cooler water.
Large water changes are necessary. They are super messy eaters.
They can get pretty big so a big tank is needed. What size is s/he in now?

I took the heater out and cooled down the water prior to putting her in. 20 gallon for now just her and some small pest snails that won’t go away. Although I think I saw her eat some. For now I have a tetra 20i and and a 10i on each side, and an air stone. I can always get another filter it’s just what I had set up. I have a few other filters I just don’t know if they will produce way to much flow in the 20 or be too large for the tank. I will have to upgrade again eventually I’m sure. I have turtles so I’m used to a lot of waste and water changes !

Thanks makes sense now. I didn’t even know what a Pom Pom was ! The fish was in with fantails so I was a bit confused. Do you know how to tell if it’s male or female?

It's hard to tell if they're not breeding, but I believe the best way is to look down under their tail to see if you can see a vent. If it's a female, you'll see a little sort of bump. If you can't see that either means it's male or you missed it.
