Job at my Local Fish Store

I was picking up an order a fish I had called in at my local pet store yesterday and noticed that they had a sign that said they were hiring. I mentioned it to the gal running the counter and she practically begged me to submit a resume since they see me in there fairly often. In my talking with them I haven't really met any of them that I'm positive knows a lot about fish, but they do a really good job there and they have planted tanks and know the general care tips, as well as are just overall responsible. So not like they aren't taking care of the fish but they don't seem very passionate, and I know I would love serving in that section of the store because I am passionate about it. They do have Bettas in cups and those kinds of things that we see in every store, but overall the shop is really sweet and more of a mom-and-pop type of store than anything else. I've been thinking and praying about it and I'm very very interested, but I'm quite successful in my pet sitting as well. My husband works full-time and I am a freelance orchard specialist so I do most of my work in the summer, but having a more sustainable job might be fun. Don't get me wrong, I love my freelance work getting to meet so many awesome clients both in the pet sitting business but as well as my orchard work. I guess I'm just throwing this out there to see what you guys think. It would be fun to be able to influence some people to do the right setup for their fish and educate them. it would also be really fun to help them order some more cool fish in the store, because I've noticed that they have most of the typical fish that everyone else carries in the stores but it would be fun to help them order some awesome nanos and maybe write some more info sheets for people. So yeah, just want to have some discussion with you guys while I think about it.

Great! I would love to work at my lfs when I'm finally 16, and it's just my wish to work at a fish store. I don't wish for anything else.

If you feel like that is what god is callng you to do than do it! I would LOVE to work at my LFS. You can go for it and if you don't like it quit. You can always try it. You will always wonder what it would have been like 10 years from now if you had taken the job.

I would absolutely go for it. It sounds like you would make a great addition to their already nice store. The only thing I would maybe mention to them is if it gets too overwhelming during your "busier season maybe you could take a break to focus on your own thing and come back in the slower or off season.

That sounds awesome. I’d trade my current job to work at my lfs any day. Definitely keep on praying over it.

No harm in giving it a go. There's only one way to figure out if you like something and that's to do it. See if you can do a part time trial run of it so you don't have to just dump your freelance for it completely. Ease into it and then make an informed decision Good luck!

Cliche, but variety is the spice of life. Go for it! Maybe one day when I’m retired I’ll even give it a go myself. Too many bills right now though

I totally agree. That is the thing I wanted to do with another lfs that doesn't know anything about fish and they also let people overstock their tanks

I might find a job at a petstore.
Petsmart employee:
Just let the tank run for a month or so than add fish.
Me:
Goes on 1/2 hour rant explaining the nitrogen cycle, feeding, stocking, etc.

Money is something every fishkeeper could use more of and still never be satisfied. (I think I’m gonna make that my quote)

Thank you everybody for your replies, it was super encouraging to me and I really really appreciate it! I updated my resume, which hasn't been updated in like 5 years because of working in freelance, and I must say I am very excited about this and I went ahead and printed it and plan on handing it in very soon. Thank you guys so much for your encouragement. I will let you guys know how it goes and keep you updated and let you know if I get the job! I don't expect to make a lot of money at this, but my husband and I have always had the agreement that it's not about how much we make as much as it is being happy with the jobs we have. Who cares about money if you're miserable LOL. Luckily we both make a decent amount of money in what we do and we love our jobs!

Sounds like a great situation and way to introduce new people into the hobby...the correct way! Keep praying and all will work out. I've often thought of working as a secondary "fun" job at the local big box...only problem is that I would only want to work with Fish and Dogs. Don't want to deal with reptiles and amphibians and don't you dare come near me with a cat!!

Another update, I dropped off my resume today and met with the manager who is doing all the hiring. She is very nice and very sweet, I hung around the shop for a while to watch how she worked with the customers and paid attention to how the animals and fish were treated and how they looked. Like I said, I really like the manager! I think they go by the inch per gallon rule though, which hopefully I won't get in trouble for not following if they hire me.

Beside doing what you like, they might give employee discounts.
