I have a 3in jack dempsey in a 55gal with over 500gph of filtration which is more than needed. The jd will move to a much larger aquarium once he is larger with other slcichlids like oscars etc. What are my option for adding similar sized ciclids with the jd to grow them out together What fish would you recommend adding and how many? What are ways of reducing aggression and will overstocking ( having 5 or 6 cichlids) help with aggression.

Depending on the fish (whether they shoal or not) can reduce aggression but with large aggressive cichlids keep them singly is always good. As for tank makes for the grow out I've kept Green Terrors, Convicts, and Jaguar cichlids with JD's before and never had an issue.

One of the keys to getting the aggression to go down in a tank is to make sure everyone has their own place to call their own. Make sure there are enough adequate hides and that they have a place to escape the other fish when needed.

what Type of JD do you have?

Thanks for the advice, ill probably go with a convict or green terror since jags are harder to find. I have a regular jd not an electric blue and I believe its a female but I'm not sure as she is only 3in. I will most likely add a couple new hiding places on the other side of the jacks tank and add the new fish right after so it can make a territory that isn't the jds.

I've also notices when setting up my tank with my JD. That I put 2 identical flower pots on opposite sides of the tank and the jack wanted to claim both cause they were the same. If you put different types of hiding like I have 1 flower pot and 1 rock formation. It seemed when I did 2 rock formations or or 3 flower pots the jack wanted them all cause they were the same. If their different the jack picked the best one she wanted and the chasing and aggression over territory slowed down. I've kinda sectioned off my tank into 2 different sides. One side with lots of rocks built to the surface and the other side very deep and open area. So it's different environment. When I had it all flat bottom she claimed the whole tank and beat up my Oscar which is bigger. But now the Oscar stays in the open water pretty much and the jack keeps to her rock pile. It didn't eliminate aggression but it slowed it down. And try to feed a variety of different food. And try to make sure the aggression of the tank gets lots of food. Most territory aggression is over food source. So if their not hungry. Less likely to fight over territory for food. And feed multI times a day. Smaller meals bit more frequent. The fish will know theirs always food. But usually if u can do all the little things they will add up. And pretty much most fish can live in harmony. I try to keep fish that can hold their own to against each other.
