Java Moss Tube

HI everybody

I'm thinking of making a java moss wall/tube to cover my whisper filter in the back of my 10 gallon:

I'm going to be housing a betta and possibly shrimp later on (the tank is cycling right now).

So I'm thinking of a black plastic mesh around the filter and attaching it with suction cups to the walls on either side, extending down to the gravel.

This should have the benefit of keeping my fish away from both the intake and output of the filter, along with a fantastic way to fill in that back corner with something! I'll move my second java fern a bit closer to the front and shift the ornament more to the left as well.

I'm planning on using the Darice brand plastic canvas... I'm wondering if I should get two and sandwich the moss in between or if I can get away with just one and sewing the moss to it with fishing line... What do you think?

Getting two is a lot more easier to install, but since you want to 'bend' it and make a half tube, you're better off taking the extra time of using one piece and sewing it on.

(IMO, your better off using xmas, flame or weeping moss to make a moss wall... they a lot more pleasing on the eye compared to the unruly look of Java)

Well I might not be able to effectively grow flame moss in my tank as I have no CO2 setup and there's probably not enough light for it either, plus I can't find christmas or weeping moss in good quantities where I live... java seems to be the easiest for me to get and grow, and I think I would like a bit of a wild looking tank
Thanks for your help!

Pretty much all mosses can grow without CO2, its just with CO2 they often grow faster and a lot more compact. And likewise, most do fine in low light environments.

I use to like the way Java looks, but after dealing with Xmas or the like, it really does detract from the scape and make it look messy... plus it gets everywhere. If you want a nice looking, non-ball of fluff then stay away from java.

I've personally found xmas moss to be rather fast growing once established, a golf ball portion (or smaller tbh) sectioned out well will only take a few weeks to show some growth, and at most a few months to pretty much completely fill in. Plus it looks a lot more nicer than xmas moss for example.

Do you mean flame moss in the beginning there? The guy selling java moss is also selling flame moss for the same price as the java so maybe I'll consider getting flame moss instead then

I haven't had long term experience with flame, but I did mean xmas. It does grow very fast!

Oh okay just wondering because you said xmas again at the end there. Xmas is gorgeous, I would love some of that for sure but Canada is barren when it comes to nice and affordable plants

Try coming to Aus! You'll be paying double for half of the plants you have there!
