1 Gallon Tank Jarrariums As Gifts?

I was bored last night and decided to start a jarrarium with some extra rock and plants I had.

Anyone else have one of these? I’d love to see some pics!

Also, I’m thinking of giving a couple of them as gifts. I’m graduating in a couple weeks and I was thinking my thesis advisor would appreciate one for her desk. I also want to get a thank you gift for my mom for paying for my school/mental support throughout the process. She loves my planted tank but I don’t trust her to properly care for a fish, so I think this would be a cool option— maybe a couple ghost shrimp for some life.

I would probably do 1-2 gallon decorative jars and I would give them each a led light for plant growth.

Does this sound like a gift you’d appreciate?

My boyfriend was like “so you’re going to give her (in reference to my advisor) a responsibility?” and that made me hesitant. But I really don’t think it would be much work with just plants if I give her the light she needs.

I think its a nice gesture. Maybe you could add a small goodie bag with a small container of ferts, a turkey baster to do small water changes if needed and a towel so there is no mess on her desk.

It’s definitely a thoughtful gift (I really like the dragonstone) but you know her best!

My concern is that since you used 30-40% of the jar for dirt there isn’t much room left for any inhabitants. I’d worry that she would put a betta in there. But maybe she wouldn’t if you gave her the ghosties

Thank you, that’s a great idea! I might even try to find a cute tiny jar for the fertilizer for aesthetics.

Thank you! I love that rock too!

And this one was just thrown together out of boredom! I would get a bigger one with a better looking jar (so you can see inside better) and I would definitely use less substrate. I’m actually going to take this one apart to use the rocks and plants in their gifts. I’ll set myself up a better looking one eventually.

To be honest I’m not sure why I put so much in there anyways— must have been because it was Friday night and I was tipsy. Lol

Good thinking about the fert container. Maybe you can find something with the little flip piece that way you can tell them to just do a drop or 2 every couple days. And be sure to find a fish related towel . And definitely be sure to tell your teacher they will be in detention if they add a betta in there

Yeah honestly I didn’t think of that and that is really scary. It would be horribly ironic if I contributed to betta abuse with how much it p***es me off.

I’ll probably write in the card that they can add some life if they want, but that only shrimp or small snails would be suitable!

Now off I go to spend the afternoon searching for a fish towel and a bunch of jars.

Here’s some pictures of how they turned out!

The big one for my mom still needs to clear up, and I’ll probably fiddle with them a little more, but I like them so far!

Thank you guys!

I think all of us need one for our desks

A great use of trimmings if you ask me!

Also, I bought some hornwort from aquatic arts awhile back but it didn’t look right to me so I set it in a .5 gallon mason jar with some untreated tap water. Just looked today and noticed 4 tiny pond snails in the jar!

They must have been there for nearly a month now but somehow survived.

Would it be okay to put them in the big jarrarium? I’d hate to have to kill them and I don’t know what else to do!

If you put them in there with the hornwort it should be fine, they aren't really able to out-eat such a fast grower even if their population explodes. If they grow large though, they might be trouble for the shrimp later.

I wouldn't give your thesis advisor a jarrarium, no. If you want to do a fun project, do it for yourself. Don't give a gift just because it's related to your interests.
However, I do think it's fine for your mother.

Thanks that’s good to know! I just did some googling and they actually look a bit more like bladder snails to me, so I don’t know if that makes a difference or not!

I may just not get the ghost shrimp in that case, I’ll have to sit on it for a bit.

I don’t think they would overpopulate too much if she doesn’t feed them but I honestly am nothing close to a snail expert.

If you look above you’ll see I already made her one

I didn’t give it just because it’s my interests, I just wanted to get her something because she’s spent a lot of time helping me the past couple of years. I was thinking a massage because she works so hard but this seemed more unique.

Fingers crossed she likes it but if not she can always give it away and I’ll be none the wiser. Lol
