James95's 55g Blog II

HI all,

I'm really not a fan of the new blog system... so I'll continue posting updates on my tanks here. Hopefully a few people will still read them (my number one reader, *cough* AkarI *cough*). This thread will be dedicated to my 55g.

Currently, the 55 house my two beloved blood parrots. They're happy as two peas in a pod and chunkier than ever! I'm doing a major cleaning this weekend and I'm also gonna pull the UGF and install 2 sponge filters. Pics before and after the cleaning are to come.

I got a new Nikon DSLR D5100 camera and still aren't great with it, but it takes amazing pics.

Stay posted

Quickie update...

Forgot to take pics before I started cleaning the tank. I pulled the UGFs and did an 80% water change. Currently deciding how I'm going to redecorate

The tank is still pretty foggy. I added a eheim liberty power filter to replace the UGF. Not sure if I should add an airstone as well. There seems to be enough surface movement between the canister filter and power filter. Thoughts?

Any chance I could put my medium sized angel in with the BPs? They're harmless clowns, I don't think they'd hurt a fly. Any thoughts?

Ken has got angels in with his BPs now. So far they are getting along great, I hear.

Oh really? Good to know, I may shoot him a PM. It would give me more options with the other tanks. I can't imagine a single angel would add much to the bioload, correct?

No, I wouldn't think so. They don't eat much compared to their size.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too.

Here's some pictures of the BPs. They're still a tad skittish from the re-decorating. Still getting used to this new camera. I went with a natural, riverbed look this time

Looks great! Where'd you get those big rocks? I love them.

Thanks! I "borrowed" them from a privately owned river near my house 2 or 3 years ago. I've used them sporadically for tank decor ever since. arty0009:

I boiled and soaked them for a month when I first got them, I even did the vinegar test. I was still leery the first time I put them in a tank but the fish were fine and my parameters were good. So yeah... free is good

River rocks shouldn't cause any issues. After all, gravel is harvested from rivers and sold to us for aquarium use.

That's true... I never thought of it that way

In the next few days I'm going to add my Angelfish and possibly my black skirt tetras from the 29g. They're adult size so I don't foresee a problem, but who really knows. Updates to come.

Update:

I added the angelfish and black skirt tetras yesterday afternoon. The angelfish is cruising the tank with the BPs as if he's one of them. It's hilarious! They're all doing great. I think I'm going to up the school of tetras to 6 or 8. Petsmart has them on sale for a buck each...

I'm so glad they're all getting along

Hey there! Yeah I have some new pics of him in my thread "Jame95's 29 gallon blog II".

He was sold to me as wild caught, but I'm still skeptical of that claim...

White skirt tetras will school with my black skirts, correct? Color doesn't matter I assume...

Uuuum, I don't know.... I think they have a bit of a different body structure, actually. Or atleast, the blacks skirts I always see are thicker in the body than white skirts.

You think? Maybe the Black skirts just look bigger because of their coloration.
I'll do some research online. I think they're the same species though, right?

Everyone's doing swimmingly. I have 2 new additions that will remain a surprise until they're out of quarantine. For now I'll leave you with a short riddle...

What's frisbee shaped, silver, and more skittish than a wild horse in a stable?

EDIT: I'm also seriously considering a tank upgrade for the 55g. It would be nice to just streamline and have just one (Gasp!) big tank. I like the dimensions of 120 longs and standard 125s. They would have to be in the basement which would require some finagling but it would be so worth it...

Hmm, maybe I wasn't cryptic enough

They're so tiny right now! About the size of a quarter. Unfortunately I didn't realize one of them has a little white patch on his side until I got home. We'll see how he does on pimafix before I bring in the big guns (maracyn).

When I upgrade they will definitely get a few more buddies to school with

Actually I'm not sure if I would have to put a 125 in the basement. It would be nice to have it in my bedroom on the second floor. I'm just worried about weight. Our house was build in the 30's or 40's so we have pretty solid rafters and joists.

The thought of 12500 pounds on the second floor just scares the crud out of me

So I came home today and the sick silver dollar is nowhere to be found. I looked everywhere. In the tank decor, on the floor, under the stand. He's just gone.

The only thing I can think of is that he jumped out from the cutout in the back and one of the dogs ate him.

Oh well. Lol

I have also found 2 fish that jumped out and were mauled by my dogs.
Oh well. Lol

I've had this issue before as well. I have had some fish completely disappear. The only thing I can think of is my dogs ate them.

It's the weirdest thing!

Should I get him a new buddy?
