Jack Dempsey Diet

A few weeks ago, I fished cycling my new 65 gallon aquarium. I added my 7 inch tiger oscar, and he loved it. The tank has a large plant decoration and this

2 weeks ago, I wanted another fish, so I got a JD. I temp acclimated him/her then added it in. The fish is probably half the side of the oscar. The next day, I fed the oscar his pellets like usual, and tried to offer some to the JD. It refused it. I didnt think anything of this due to the fact the fish is new. By the way, the fish has been hiding in the wood the entire time. Anyways, I tried 3 different type of pellets and he didnt accept any. Getting desperate after 5 days, I found a worm and he slurped it up. Iv fed him one a day for the past 3 days and he eats them. I know this isn't the best, so I was wondering, what do you feed your fish, how do you not get other fish to eat it, can it eat guppies, shrimp, etc.

any help accepted

jack demoseys are carnivores. Do you use carnivores diet pellets? Throw in some ghost shrimp or feeder fish. When I had mine, that what I would give him. If not try garlic guard by seachem.

Jacks are actually omnivore they can eat both greens and meats. I feed mine mostly a protein rich diet and recently introduced cut up shrimp for it to munch on.

As for the 65 tank, I think the tank will be quite small for Oscar.

Right, sorry about that.

I agree on that, the tank is too small for an oscar.

Minimum tank size for a single oscar is 55g, the 65 is a temp home for the jack Dempsey.

55 is too small for one Oscar. The depth is something like 11.5 inches. When an Oscar gets up to 13-15" it can't really turn well efficiently.

As for your JD hiding...since it's new to the tank it's not quite familiar with the surroundings. It might take a week or so and it will warm up eventually.

The 65 the oscar is in has a depth of 19 inches, witch seems like enough. Anyone I have ever talked to said a 65 should be fine has long has hes not having difficulties, which hes not.

Thanks for the help!

As long as he’s happy that’s all it matters.
