Best way to tell gender of the Jack Dempsey is the lower jaw/gill area. Your picture isn't clear enough to verify, but if blue speckles on the lower jaw/gill then a female. Males won't have that.

Check out the photos to see different examples -

My Dempsey is about three inches my tank now is a 40 gallon I have a 90 gallon in a fishless cycle as we speak...the blue specs start right above the gill plate would it be safe to say it's a male

Also any tips and info on these three little guys would be great I just started this new hobby about two months ago I would also like to add two convicts once my 90 gallon is done with the fishless cycle

First of all, welcome to Fishlore! Unfortunately, you won't be able to fit any convicts in the 90 as you are already potentially overstocked once both oscars are fully grown.

Fair warning in convicts. They breed like bunnies. When you have a breeding pair they become extremely territorial. I have a friend who has them and he can't give the fry away. Most pet stores use the fry as feeders. I personally keep a single convict and she does quite well, she even has a pet rock!

Looks like a male Dempsey. If you like convicts, maybe put them in you smaller tank when you move your other fish to the 90. Convicts are easy to breed, fun to watch and almost impossible to get rid of the babies. Being cold about it, the babies are good Oscar food. You can add other types of fish in the 90 with the Oscars and Dempsey, but convicts aren't a good choice.
No matter what, have fun with your new hobby, Harry

That sounds like a good idea what other tank mates would you suggest for the jd and Oscars in the 90

It really depends on what you want to feed. There are lots of different cichlids that should work. You need to do some research on what you like, and is available. I would also look into tire track eels, clown knife, shovelnose cats, and some of the other odd ball fish. You can't have them all, but you can do some of them.
