Yeah, am the same. I have no clue what those plant weights are made of (aside from metal, obviously).

Re: It's true: plecos love their cucumber!

That would be why I have no intention of eating them.  I shall have to stick to tinned fish, more is the pity.
or battered haddock and chips ....
You know that it is much better for the fish stocks that we eat coley or pollock instead of cod and haddock. A consumer test found that people prefered the taste of coley and pollock to cod and haddock yet no body really eats it in the uk. Its such a shame knowing that the north sea cod stocks are almost crippled beyond repair yet nobody is really doing anything about changing it. I'll shut up now.

Re: It's true: plecos love their cucumber!

That's really informative, thanks. I was wondering what fish were less low in stock, and which to steer clear of. If I start eating fish/meat again, I'd like to do so in an informed way. So thx for that, no shutting up required.

I do agree, but haddock and salmon are the most readily available here. any other fish are very hard to get hold of unless you travel to the coast to get it. I have eaten pollock in frozen ready meals, and it tastes much the same to me as cod and haddock, but i'm just not a fan of the ready meal thing....prefer to buy fresh fish and batter it myself (gluten and dairy free then so my son can eat it too ;D). I'll keep a look out though for alternatives! - btw, someone told me about "cod worms" years ago and put me off it back then before the stocks were publicised! dunno if they really exist or not though!

Re: It's true: plecos love their cucumber!

I wouldn't worry about 'cod worms'. Salt water parasites don't tend to effect fresh water creatures ie humans. Its why you can eat pretty mush all ocean going fish raw but freshwater fish i'd advise cooking.

Re: It's true: plecos love their cucumber!

So, anyone else out there with fun pictures of fish eating cucumber, peas, other cool stuff? I think it looks so funny.

Re: It's true: plecos love their cucumber!

Whatever is left on that clip LOL :...which I don't know what is I didn't take it out yet today and put another piece on it yet. It's really strange how my male comes out during the day and the female comes out during the night, so I never get pics of the female except I have her juvie one's. I'm still hoping they breed but it doesn't look like they like each other. I see if I can get a picture of him eating a piece of cucmber soon.

I heard juveniles came out day and night, and adults only night. No idea why yours aren't really following that pattern. Interesting, interesting...

my eldest bn is nearly fully grown and they all (3 of them) come out at various times of the day. I vary my feeding times for them though (they get fed every other day at the mo at a completely random time!), so when ever I go by the tank they see it as a chance food just might be heading their way I think!! they darent go and hide in case they miss anything! besides, they are busy cleaning most of the time!

Thanks for the picture, Jim. I loooove these pictures of plecos eating. Yours looks like a MONSTER. That is solid fish, my man. How big is he?

Re: It's true: plecos love their cucumber!

he's about 5" or so. Not too huge yet, but you're right, he's solid. Eventually I figure I'll have to find a nice pond and let him live out his years in freedom.

Oh, of course, you live in Florida. If I'd left a pleco out in a pond here he'd die in one night from the cold. We're in The Netherlands.

Re: It's true: plecos love their cucumber!

armadillo, yeah, it's warm here, but a bit hazardous. I remember a few years ago in the news someone was trying to catch a wild pleco and got bit by a gator...

I remember the Netherlands. I was in the Army in Germany in the 80's and visited Amsterdam. I don't remember it too well, but I do remember it was very pretty.

Yep, Amsterdam's really pretty! I don't find Holland in general that pretty, though. Ah well, marrying a Dutchman has its drawbacks!

Re: It's true: plecos love their cucumber!

I'm NEVER getting married again... the first time was a nightmare, and things since have just gone downhill. At this point I figure it's easier just being alone.

Anyway, I thought this was pretty funny... it's a picture of the cucumber... 15 minutes after dropping it in the tank!

Re: It's true: plecos love their cucumber!

15 minutes! You're kidding. That's some smart fish you've got there.

Well, I sometimes feel that way too when things are not rosey, but then the positive completely outweighs the negative in our case. We do take it one day at a time and consider ourselves lucky that it's not gone haywire yet. Am a huuuuuge pessimist for that sort of stuff.

Re: It's true: plecos love their cucumber!

JI'm just one small suggestion... when putting slices of veggies in the tank, cut through the peel a little bit. A pleco that has a ring caught around it is reeaalllyyy hard to catch(take my word for it )

I hadn't thought of that, but knowing Paublo, he'll smash thru that cucumber ring like it was some sort of mushy plant....

...wait, it is a mushy plant.

I'm sorry, Jim, you seem to be confused. It's not a pleco that you've put in your tank, it's a BULLDOZER! Get out while you still have time, quiiiick.

this is the first time I put fresh veggies in my tank. UD loves them, and my mollies nibble a little 2. I didn't have any weights, so I stuck a fork in the cuc, and threw it in. somehow UD managed to get under the fork!

Kramer has finally started to be a little less shy and come out more during the day. I finally remembered to buy a cucumber while grocery shopping. At first, just my rosy barbs were going nuts for it...but then Kramer found it. He loved it! ;D

Re: It's true: plecos love their cucumber!

I wouldn't know. My Oscar gobbles down cucumbers before my pleco even knows they're in there. :-\ What did you do? Wedge the cuc under a rock or something? I'll have to try that. On the plus side, I found a new cheap food that my Oscar simply LOVES!!!

I just boiled mine for a few minutes, and they sunk to the bottom.

Re: It's true: plecos love their cucumber!

I'll try it! I figured they would get water-logged pretty fast and sink by themselves... but the Oscar discovered them WAY before that ever happened. I tried to tell him that gluttony was one of the seven deadly sins, but he was too busy eating to listen to me.

Re: It's true: plecos love their cucumber!

Trpimp147, the best time to give them cucumbers at first is at night. Let them tear into it over night and take out the remains in the morning. But at the advice of butterfly, I cut a slice into the peal so my pleco doesn't eat a hole in the middle of the cucumber slice and get stuck in it. Sounds a bit far fetched, but my pleco is nuts, so if it can be done, he's do it. Scroll up, someone on this thread is a picture of a slice about 10 minutes after I dropped it into the tank. You'll see what I mean.
Anyway, after a couple weeks and a few slices, 5 or 6 I think, I started dropping them into the tank in the evening when the light was still on and he was on it in less than a minute. He's just as fast with an algae wafer. I'm very impressed with the pleco sense of smell!

The males will grow bristles at about 2 to 2-1/2 inches, and will have bristles all over his face. Most females don't have any at all but the few who do just have them around the lip area.
