It's Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week!

Let's hear it for big black dogs, old dogs, and the rest of the less adoptable furbabies just waiting to be given a chance!

https://www.care2.com/

On Monday, we adopted a 10 year old Jack Russell/Rat Terrier unspayed female with a tumor in her eye and the worse teeth I've ever seen on a dog. She has a raspy bark that can peel paint off the walls. On top of her health issues, she doesn't do kids or cats. She actually grrrrrrrrr'd at a poster of a cat in the vet's office.

She'd already been at our town's dog pound for 3 months and her future looked bleak.

Let me tell you, she is the sweetest girl. She's got SO much personality. Aside from the few health issues, she checked out great at the vets last night. Soon she'll be spayed and have her teeth taken care of. The tumor is just something we have to watch but not really worry about.

Will post pics when I get home and you can meet the lovely Sophie..... arty0049:

Congrats!!! I can't wait for pictures. Our Chloe was at AC for three months as well, and her future was bleak. She's the best dog we've ever owned and I wouldn't trade her for anything. Shelter dogs can be so amazing.

All my dogs have been from shelters or local pounds or, in one case, an abusive home situation. Plus, I've been volunteering with shelters for the last 15 years.

There is nothing like the gratitude that you get from a rescue dog. And nothing does your heart so good as to know that you've given them what they've never had before, a true sense of peace and belonging.

Aww! That's awesome. How did they know she wasn't spayed. Did she had puppies?

We checked for a spay scar. Sometimes it's really hard to tell. When the female's gone into at least one heat, the vulva enlarges and stays that way. So, she's definitely had one heat. We believe she's spayed but will know for sure within 3 months if she doesn't come in to heat.

Here's Sophie! Can't wait until she relaxes enough that I can clip her nails!

so is this dogs only or can it be snakes, bird and such as they tend to have a hard time finding their ways from shelters(youd be surprised how many have snakes.)

It's every pet, I normally gravitated to dogs when I typed the title of the thread..... my bad!

She was definitely cozy. She smelled so bad with that awful kennel smell, we actually gave her a bath her second night home. Now she smells like tropical flowers!

yeah there are a lot of snakes that people just get rid of. a guy at my lfs found some kind of python outside under a porch....almost ready to die. people are so careless with pets they can't take care of anymore.

lynda: well at least she is a short hair....so you don't have to worry about grooming right

Yeah, out of 3 dogs, only one needs to really be brushed out.

She's beautiful!!!

We changed our Chloe's name too. Her original (shelter name) was Nina, then her foster named her Alex, and we changed her name to Chloe the day we met her - it just fit.

ours was chihiro, or something like that. I think from some japanese anime show....I just coudn't see myself calling her that. chloe just fit as well

my dog needs to be groomed, but doesn't shed like my 3 fat cats. they produce huge tumbleweeds of hair >.<

theres a thing down the street at my LFS right now, they ahve tons of dogs out side, most of them are mid puppy or full grow. Their all mutts and such and for the most part are the dogs that wouldnt get adopted. They do this every saturday. Theres mostly males, a lot of pit mixes and stuff. Their all cute and had a free vet check. they also have free hamsters and stuff inside that are free to a good home. I got my Blairs kingsnake from them, she would have never been adopted.

She's adorable! I not really a big fan of small dogs though, but I do like the face expression. LOL

I so want another dog, but my landlady says no. Understandable since we're at our limit for dogs on the premises per the county/city (four, including my Cash lol)...but still! I love big black dogs!

I hate county laws that can tell you how many dogs you can have. I do think you should have to prove your dog is vetted properly and, of course, licensed, but c'mon, don't tell me how many I can have. We don't have that here in CT, not to my knowledge anyway.
