Nope, it won't hurt the fish. No matter the wattage of the heater, the thermostat will will turn it off before the tank gets too warm.

May I ask why you aren't just using the heater that came with your 90g? What wattage is it?

At least your taking care of your oscars. I used to have two heaters and one heater would run than the other would kick in. I placed mine by the outfllow of my filter and all moved the thermometer to all corners of my tank and the temp was the same

For the record, you are safer with 2 or 3 smaller heaters instead of one large one for two reasons.

1) If a heater breaks on won't turn on then at least you have another heater or two in the tank as backup.

2) If a heater breaks and won't shut off then it will take a LOT longer time to hear up your entire tank and you will realize the problem sooner.

I personally like running two heaters on all my tanks set so that one carries the main heating and the other set to kick in only when extra heating is needed. If you run two heaters that are slightly under rated for the tank you also are protecting your tank from over heating somewhat if a heater sticks on.

I have had heaters stick on more than once which have cost me fish so I have learned the hard way to buy smaller heater but run them in tandem so that if one sticks on it will take longer for it to over heat the tank. I also run them on opposite ends of the tank near the bottom with a thermometer near the top so that I can monitor them closely.

I agree that running multiple smaller heaters to heat a larger tank helps to avoid overheating issues if the heater should malfunction.

Thread moved to the Heaters forum.

Good luck transferring your Oscars.
