Is this safe for betta fish?

So my friend has a betta in a 3 gal bowl she knows like nothing about fish besides me ranting about them lol but I’m guiding her. Is this stuff safe for bettas I know it sounds silly but this stuff looks kind of cool so I picked some up from Walmart by the way I Gave her a small sponge filter for her bowl

 

I saw that a petco, and wondered the same thing. I saw them again on amazon, but when I read the reviews it sounded like the balls would shrink, and the betta would eat them, and they would inflate again. This was a couple of reviews, but enough to skip it for me at least...

Yikes I don’t want that to happen I guess I’ll keep them just in case like if I get a tiny baby betta I don’t know yet
Yea.. I read reviews im gonna throw them away. What a shame

 

I always just use regular aquarium gravel or sand. Most products labelled for "bettas" always seem like a waste of time and money to me so i usually avoid them like the plague, except food.

 

I stay away from Walmart fish products

 

I also feel like the fact that it has a warning on the back saying that you should wash your hands after handling it isn't a good sign. If it's not safe for your hands, how could it be safe for a fish?
