Is this java fern dead or dying or fine?

I have two java ferns in my son's tank. One is green and has SO many little brown things growing from it and I see a couple baby leaves appearing. But this one doesn't look so good.....is it dead? Or on it's way to being dead?

Getting old it’s growing new babies on the ends of the leaves, so when it eventually dies and decomposes the babies get released to start again!
Just keep the Nitrogen high enough for them and you’re good.
The browning is age due to the leaf being large already.

Ok thank you! So I don't need to do anything with it then? Do I need to replant the babies or just let it do its thing?

Just checking?
Java fern should definitely not have the roots in soil or gravel. It is planted on wood or rocks. Often superglued or held in place with cotton until it gets it’s roots attached.

To answer your question about the young plants.
Let the old leaf turn brown before you finally remove the old leaf. Place it somewhere in the back of the tank for a couple of months before you trim the old leaf away and glue them to something.

Yes I actually read about attaching them to something today. The girl at the pet shop told me to plant them in the gravel which is what I did. Thankfully they have done not too bad in there, except this one doesn't look too hot. My other one is doing great. I will follow your advice thank you!

I was tempted to but one thing I've learned since starting an aquarium.....is everything I thought I knew, I didn't and everything that seems obvious....isn't! So I figured id ask first!

If they are brown and not producing babies go ahead and cut it off. It is more than likely a totally dead leaf. If you see spots on it that look like tiny roots it isn't totally dead. If that is the case leave it on the plant and let the babies grow. Dead leaves on my java ferns will actually detach easily from the plant. Just a gentle tug will pull them loose. even then I often leave them floating for a while to make sure they aren't going to grow babies. They don't have to be attached to the mother plant to do so.

I would just tie or glue this one to something in the tank and give it time to settle in. Being planted in the gravel may have smothered it a bit. Leaving its roots exposed may help it out.
