HI please advise have had tank fishless cycled fully for last 3 weeks took 6 to cycle it I have had no spikes in ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 20ppm got 5 Odessa barbs 3 weeks ago when tank cycled everything has been fine until a few days ago noticed a small sort of cut on his mouth was very red then has now turned a sort of white am worried that it is some sort of disease or he just cut his mouth as he swims very fast around the tank. And it's now healing. He has been acting a bit odd like hiding all the time but does come out to eat every day when I feed please help don't want my fish to die.

Clean water! Just do more water changes. Keep the water clean and the wound should heal.

Do you think it is just a cut or could it be a disease don't want them all to get infected as going away for 5 days next week and someone just coming to feed them I have been doing a 40% water change once a week due for next one tomorrow.

Hard to tell in the pic. Where you said it was red was it a gash or red mark? Best I can say is change water daily and see what happens. What size tank.

It is a 27 us gallon it just looked like some of the skin had scraped off at first then within 2 days started turning white can't get a good picture as they fly round the tank like lunatics I am thinking of swapping them out as seems like they would be better in a bigger tank with more room as they go so fast think they will injure themselves eventually anyway

Are there white spots in that fish (or any of your other fish?) as well as the wound you are referring to?
What is your pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels right now?
You are cycling your tank with fish in it?
Are you using Seachem Prime in your tank?

Okay, all other fish look okay? None of them have sores or wounds?
What kind of fish and how many do you have in there with him? Do you have a hospital tank you could put him in if you needed to?

Yes they look fine put the odessa barbs in on the first week then a week later added a betta because my son really wanted one.have been checking parameters daily since tank cycled then beginning of this week put 7 small cardinal tetra in and they are doing fine have I stocked to quickly even though my parameters have been good the whole time. Only thing changed this week was brown algae on the front of the glass of my tank but have anacharis anubias water lettuce and 2 large moss balls.and no I have no way of doing a hospital tank at the moment can't afford to at the minute really gutted as thought have been doing everything right

It almost looks like that is an injury from a little fighting among the barbs. How many of each of the males and female barbs do you have? They can be quite aggressive.

Are all males as dark as the one in the picture? If so they are all female some look like they have more of an orange stripe through the middle but maybe they are not full grown yet? They do chase each other like crazy mad and am thinking for the size of tank I may take them back to lfs and change them because they go really fast and am worried that they will really hurt themselves I saw one of them take a hard hit into the gravel when they were getting chased but it's not the fish in question but am thinking this is what may have happened while I was at work

That may very well be the case. They may not be fully matured yet. They are also very poor tank mates to have with a betta. They will eventually start biting at the bettas fins. Can you post a picture of your whole tank? My guess is that either this barb nose planted into something and injured itself, or got into a territory fight with another barb. These particular barbs look great in a long well planted tank with tetras and at least 6 of their own species but are really not happy in tall tanks with little horizontal swimming room and too few of their own species. They are terrible in tanks with slow moving, long finned fish.

Will get a pic in the morning tank is 75cm long 35 deep and 40 high can you see it on my profile pic? I still do think they might be better in a longer tank than what I have they haven't been at the betta as yet he chases them away if anything but as they get bigger this might change! I do think it is an injury tbh he is the biggest one out of them all and probably couldn't fit through the gaps as easy as the smaller ones

Ah I see! So you have about 110 litre tank? Nice tank! It seems adequate for them. I would just keep the water clean and watch it for now. If it does get worse, repost to this thread and I will be alerted. Others might have more suggestions so consider those as well. Good luck! I
