Is This Decor Safe?

Hello again!

I've been feeling like my betta's tank is pretty bare, so I started looking into some decor. I eventually found two pieces that I liked, but now I'm paranoid that they aren't safe. They're the Top Fin Ancient Bridge and Top Fin Balines Lantern. I heard that Top Fin isn't very high quality, and I'm worried about paint flaking or chemicals leaching. Have you guys ever had any issues with these two pieces? Should I scrap the idea and look for something else instead?

You should be fine. They're décor made for aquariums, after all. I believe Top Fin just gets a bad rep for it's maintenance and water care supplies.

If you're really worried about it, just keep an eye on the décor for any chipping and do a few more water tests than usual to make sure your water levels are still on par.

It is sold for the purpose of being in a fish tank from a widely sold brand. It is probably safe.

It's going to be safe if it's made for an aquarium, and if it's not rough enough to tear a betta's fins.

Thank you! I wasn’t sure about them at first, but you guys do bring up some good points about aquarium use.

Edit: After I rinsed off the Lantern decoration, it started smelling like chemicals. Should I just keep soaking it and assume it's fine? Sorry to be bothersome, just worried for my boy.

I have personally tried these decorations and have had problems with paint flaking off. I personally wouldn’t use them.

Top fin is Petsmart’s own brand. It’s not the best quality but that doesn’t mean you can’t use it. I’ve had issues with plecos sucking paint off and had issues with sharp edges on Aquarium decor. That’s not just top fin. Unless you have a pleco I’d just check for sharp edges. You can always sand it down with fine sandpaper and then rinse it really well.

Some of the decorations look really cool but now I just use natural rocks and wood.
