Is this a usable tank?

I saw a 56g column tank in the store today, and was wondering if it's practical to keep fish in. I had originally intended to get a 40g tank.

    I am interested in keeping:
    Cory Cats
    Tetras
    Smaller Pleco
    Ghost Shrimp
    Platies or Mollies

Column tank? As in a tall tank? Pictures?

With taller tanks, it would be better to keep fish that like height such as Angelfish. Cories need a long tank since they're bottom dwellers.

Yes it is a tall tank. I wasn't aware that some fish preferred height. I wish I could get a regular 55 gallon but I just don't have the space.

Then I would go with the 40 long if that's the fish you want also get a decent sized pleco around 6 in. so algae will be in check.
