hey guys I am making a small 2.5 gallon fish bowl aquarium. I want to have a really low light plant. So would a desktop light be fine or would I have to get something stronger?

It is best to buy a light that has been designed for plants/ animals because different lights produce different colour light spectrums. If you want the plant to grow it must get light of the right wavelength.
Although most lamps look white the colour spectrums can be very different. I have found small clip on LED tank lights on Amazon fairly cheeply.

It should be ok without live plants. When it comes to fish the light is more for your benefit than theirs. As long as they get a bit of indirect daylight the fish will be fine.
