I was looking a the Seachem tidal filter, but I noticed it has a surface skimmer which is a good and bad thing, what I want to know is there anyway to turn the skimmer off? Or will the whole filter have to be turned off?

What others have done to totally remove the skimmer is a thin coat of Aquarium silicone over the top set of intake slots to block them off.

I like mine. I just upgraded my Tidal 55 to the 75. Believe it or not I'm putting the 55 on my 10 gallon shrimp tank. To protect the shrimp what I've done is remove the cover to the motor and install some small coarse sponge inside to cover the intake slots on the bottom. Will take some small mesh material, paint it black and cover the upper intake to the skimmer. Also added a prefilter to the bottom of the intake tube. Had to cut down the intake tube to fit the 10 gallon but the flow control is perfect for the 10 gallon also. Probably won't have to clean the filter for 6 months or more.

So there is no way of turning it off?
