I recently bought pool filter sand for my shell dweller tank and I love it, but the sand was very fine, and since I want to se4t up a well planted tank, I was wondering if there was any coarse pool filter sands in Canada
thanks
edit: could I go to a sand gravel company and buy their sand, or would the sand be too dirty?

okay. I've heard that play sand is super dirty and takes hours to clean. what are your thoughts on this?

Not sure my cheapie phone camera will show coarse vs fine sand, lol
I'll give it a try tomorrow. (Sand is all in my 32g multie tank).
The bag it came in is long gone.

It's like putting dirt into your tank, it's supposed to be dirty :D Just do nothing and the dirt will all settle down. A lot of people confuse it with the initial bacterial bloom from starting a new tank, but that's a different cloudiness. Sand will clear up by itself.

PFS has one different pre
Yeah but that's the expensive version. I buy the cheapest: General PDP Template
But there is one main difference between PFS and playsand. The first is "designed" to let water run through it (grains are more or less the same size and rounded so it will never clog). That is probably the reason for the pricedifference in the same brand.

The play sand is dirty. But I haven't found it to be any worse than some of the commercial substrates I've used, like fluorite for example.

I don't bother getting the water to run perfectly clean. I rinse it out 6-8 times and call that good enough. The tank will be a cloudy for about 24 hours but it clears up.

I don't want to risk anything with the substrate, and it only costs $5 more, so I think ill just go with PFS

The PFS actually costs 4x more because its lbs vs kg

And that’s good or bad?

Aquarium-wise its just spending 4x more for the same thing. Unless of course you like the white color. Either way it's still cheaper than pet stores :)

I understand. As you can see, they have no problem with constant reconstruction , even with this coarse stuff. They seem to have stabilized between 30 and 40 in this 32.5 gallon Fluval.

I was quite shocked that the shell dwellers could even move the sand

They have buried large rocks and at least 25 bigger shells. I keep adding shells. They move it one mouthful at a time..and don't seem to tire quickly.

how do you add shells territory wise?My Shellies made territories, and now its kinda hard to add new shells

I add them as infrequently as possible. I don't have a way to prevent the short term chaos that follows tho.
I find they reestablish territories pretty much in 24 hours. Doesn't seem to slow overall reproduction. This 32g tank has stabilized between 30 to 40 fish. I can never get an exact count, way too much action!
