Is the Aqueon 29 Gallon Kit Any Good?

From before I was thinking of getting a 20-gallon tank. The filter, heater, and everything was my personal choice. The stocking was 1 betta, 7 Cherry Barbs (Male), and 6 albino corydoras. Then I am now considering a 29-gallon tank. My budget is $230. Everything was expensive so I decided to get the Aqueon 29 gallon kit. It is only 140$. I will be getting an Aquaclear 30, and the Ehiem heater. The total is $180. Should I upgrade or not? And If i do upgrade what fish should I add? Thank you in advance.

I have had great luck with the 10 gal version. Should be able to use the heater for some time. Unless its a preset i would just go with it.

I got that kit a long long time ago and I can tell you the only thing I kept was the tank itself. Everything that came with it was complete trash in my opinion. The filter always stopped working and the heater only heated to 75 degrees.

I was gonna get a 20 gallon tank with:
1 Betta
7 Cherry Barbs
6 Albino Corydoras
What fish should I add?

You're pretty much at full capacity there, only with some space for shrimp or something. Also be careful with having betta in a community tank because sometimes they can be aggressive to their tankmates. I would add a few more barbs and corys, and some nerite snails and ghost shrimp maybe.

Eheim heaters are notoriously hard to calibrate, and sometimes you just have to accept that they will be 2-3 degrees off, but they work well, for many many years.

If you mean instead of the betta, then yes, I don't see why not, as long as you get a male.

I got the 29 kit as well and also got rid of everything that came with it. Sometimes I’ll put the heater in if my big heater doesn’t give out enough heat in the winter.

If you live near a PetSmart, consider the Top Fin 29g starter kit.

They routinely go on sale for 50% off. Probably make it in the $65-$75 range.

I've never had an issue with their heaters. Their lids and built in LED's are actually decent. I'm currently using their 55g kit for our African cichlids, and the LED light bars built into the lid are actually more than sufficient.

Their Silenstream filters aren't bad either, especially if you ditch the cartridge and insert a block of foam sponge in its place.

In my opinion, all it would need is a sponge filter driven by an air pump.

Alternatively, consider buying a bare 29g Aqueon tank when they go on sale for $1/gallon at Petco.

One of those paired with their Versa-Top lids would be a good start.

Get the bigger filter as well. 30 for a 20-30gal tank is barely adequate. If you approach fully stocked you will want to spend extra on a 50/70.

I purchased the 20g kit, upgraded the heater & filter & it's still going strong. In November, on black Friday I was exactly in your shoes! Juggling between the kit or the just the tank & purchasing everything separately. I ended up buying just the Aqueon 29g glass tank when it went on sale for 1dollar per gallon + I had petco points saved up. I purchased a bigger filter separate & ended up spending 80$ on the hood & 2 LED Lamps, IMO it was worth it though! My plants grow a lot better in the 29g than they do in my Aqueon 20g - because in the 20g the hood is the one that came with the kit.
But I like some of Aqueon's products. (Some lol) I've never had a huge issue with any of the filters or heaters. So I would just say to think about your personal tank needs, if planted you may need higher lighting, if resin/plastic decor & plants you could probably save money buying the kit. Good luck!
Oh I purchased a 5gal Aqueon kit- I used it for 5 years & now my mother in law has been using it for an additional year- sometimes Aqueon surprises me

If you have a Petco you will have a lot left over after you drop the thirty bucks on the tank itself. I found a new hob filter and heater at my LFS for $15, a decent light for about $50, the glass is what, like another $15? So that's about $110 in to get it running with the basics. If you get a good heater and filter it would bump it up of course, but I'm guessing the kit doesn't have them and you have to buy anyway, hence the eheim etc?
I will go deep for cool fish and substrate and plants and pretty rocks, but I just want hardware to be reliable, and sponge filters are just that- I would probably start all my tanks that way these days, or at least most (the tall tanks need all the help they can get).
This is what that 29 g (my second 'from scratch', no kit) looks like so far, my scape is basically 'get in there; stay DOWN!' at this point, but hopefully the plants will take lol. They're different to scape than others (seems obvious ) not exactly hard, but challenging. Have fun!
(I think a 29 might be too deep for bettas though. I wish I had never moved my sweet King into it when he was so happy in his 15, maybe he wouldn't have sought shelter in that stupid fluval co2 tube :'( I am considering trying a wild type or giant in one again but it isn't really their favorite.)
