I use apI stress coat, but I honestly don't want to buy anymore. Is it necessary for my fish? Also, what are some good water conditioners that are cheaper(besides seachem prime, since it binds ammonia, nitrite and nitrate I only want to use it in an emergency)

No, you can use any dechlor you want as long as it works... I use Aqueon and prime when I see ammonia.

What's wrong with using prime all of the time?

Because I change my tank water in buckets and it freaks me out to add a small dose of Prime to the tank instead of a small drip in every bucket. IDK a tick if you will. Plus I have a big bottle of Aqueon to use up and it works.

I just use a cheap dechlorinater. I use weco products. It’s like $4.00.

It would be nice to find a stresscoat product that is cheaper. API is very pricey....

I remember reading that for stress coat like products to get a concentration that would help the fish you basically have to pour it on them. So no its not needed. As long as you neutralize the chlorine/chlorimine your good.

I also read that stress coat products do not work. there are articles you can look up on google.
I am kind of a dummy, thought that Seachums prime had stresscoat in it for like 10 years. and all that time I never used any other stress coat product, and my fish didnt seem any worse for it. I have Seachems Para guard now, I used it the other day after my cichlids were lip locked for 10 minutes , but IDK if its helpfull, and likly will not buy more.
