Is something wrong with my fry?

Over the last week I've noticed one of my fry looks and acts very differently from the other 10. It is much darker in color (almost black) and spends a LOT of time laying on the plastic rails at the bottom of the breeder's net. It does swim around some but it seems like it has to work harder to get around. Sometimes it's almost like it is scooting along the rail. It does appear to be eating although not nearly as excitedly as the other fry. Other than the different coloration, I can't see any physical abnormalities. I don't know how closely relate the parents are but I do know this is the female's first batch of fry. They are all 3 weeks old as of yesterday.

Does anyone know what this could be? What should I do? I've included a video of the fry. The one in question is on the lower left side of the screen, laying on the net rail.

It does look like the one isn't doing as well as the others. As he isn't as active as the others and as he is scooting about instead of swimming, there is some type of deformity. This is not unusual.

Good luck raising your fry.

Thank you Catsma. Sadly, the fry was dead this morning. I looked him over after I took him out of the tank but I still couldn't see anything physically wrong. At least he's not suffering now.

It may have been a blessing. I am sorry you lost the fry.

Yes sorry to hear you lost one. The fry just might not of developed right in side so you wouldn’t see any out word sign. Were the fry born in the net or in the tank? He might have been damaged some way when netting or by another fish before it was separated and put into the breeder net.

Thank you bowcrazy, I hadn't thought of that. It's definitely very possible since they were born outside of the net.

Culling is when you purposely end the fish's life. This is done by breeders for many reasons. Culling can be anything from euthanasia to using as feeders for larger fish.

That fish would be considered a cull, I think that's what he was getting at. Not all fry will be perfect, this is one of the reason that they have soooo many babies. It's sad but it happens. Just part of owning livebearers. Good Luck with everything
