Is Salt water "live sand" safe for freshwater fishies?

I'm starting a 27 gallon freshwater aquarium. I want to do some aquascaping in it (If I can) and so I want it to look natural. In addition to this I want my tank to be as healthy as possible (obviously). I've been reading up on the nitrogen cycle and good bacteria and stuff and I've seen the phrase "Live sand" pop up a lot.

I'm on kind of a tight budget so I've been looking at craigs list for equipment and supplies. I saw a listing for sand in my area but I can tell from the fish the guy is selling that the sand must be from a saltwater tank. He says it's live sand

In my mind my finished tank has a few glo fish (I'm thinking 6-8) (I know I know they're genetically messed with but I like them ok?) A couple normal danios, maybe a dalmation molly or two named Pongo and Perdita, 1-2 bottom feeders and a snail? or maybe a shrimp named Jacques.

I'm also planning on having some plants but the only ones I know for sure I want is plain ol' java moss.

Can I buy and use the live sand stuff?

Hi, welcome to Fishlore
SW Live Sand is not suitable for Freshwater.

Live Sand is full of Saltwater critters that would die and pollute a Freshwater environment, not too mention the sand itself may adversely affect your Freshwater parameters.

If you're looking for sand suitable for FW, many use Pool Filter Sand (PFS)

Pool filter sand is supposed to be great I went with play sand from our local ace. I had to wash it a lot though.

I love the black sand by Caribeau that I got at Petsmart. Rinsed it three times and no mess in tank. Worth the money and went a long way.
