My pleco managed to get his head stuck in his wood a few nights ago. I had to sit there and break apart pieces of the wood from the inside out before he could move again. I moved him into a different tank so he wasn't tempted by that same piece of wood, but is this something common for plecos, to get stuck, or is he just an exceptionally dumb fish?

He probably just wants something to hide in.

He'd been using it to hide in for months. I don't know what the heck possessed him to completely shove his face into the wood to the point he got stuck. He didn't need to do that to be fully hidden.

All fish are dumb. Don't expect them to be able to rationalize like we do.

I don't expect much, but I would expect a survival instinct.

are you sure he was really stuck? i know triggerfish will wedge themselves into a tight spot and lock themselves in place.

Pretty sure. He scares really easily (as in someone walking on the other side of the room easily) and wasn't moving at all, even when being touched. I initially thought I was going to be pulling out a dead pleco, but once I broke away some of the wood, he got out of there as fast as possible.
