Is my guppy pregnant and how long before she gives birth?

well I asked a couple of weeks ago about my guppies and was so sure they are pregnant. ive had them 20 days now and seein as they looked kinda big and pregnant when I bought them, where are the babies?my biggest female has what looks like red in her gravid spot and she does seem a bit bigger but the smaller female looks the same, shes fat with a gravid spot but not getting bigger. I remember there being a baby a couple of weeks ago in my tank so do u think that was one of them having given birth and now shes pregnant again or was that just an early baby? I have read that a fish can have one baby then have the rest a week later but this baby was 2 weeks ago. maybe I'm impatient but it feels like forever waiting for these babies.I have left the fish in the tank, I have opted out the breeding net as I read that can be stressful for the fish and there's a fair amount of plant for the babies to hide in if they ever come. I don't think any more babies have been born because I watch them like a hawk and nothing.I read watching a fish giving birth is an amazing thing to see so unless they had babies at night when I'm sleeping, they haven't had any babies...

Gestation period is about 28 days, sometimes moving them can delay delivery. Maybe moving them from the lfs to your tank delayed them. Keep an eye out, should be soon.

HI I'm new to the forum, and have a question. when my guppy gets close to dropping her fry, should I put her in a 5 gall0n tank of her own? or let her have them in the tank shes in? there is one male in there and one mollie. and lots of plants foilage. java fern and water sprite at the top. Thanks .

It could stress her out by moving her. Stressing a pregnant livebearer too much can cause them to abort some, if not all of the fry. We leave ours in their home-tanks, but for doing so we realize we lose a percentage of each batch of fry to their parents and other fish in the tank munching on the high protein snack that are their fry.

It is a question of preference.

Oh and WELCOME TO FISHLORE!

Use a breeder trap
That way you'll be able to isolate your fish and at the same time keep her in the same tank so not to stress her with a change in water.

See this:

that is the one I have.

We let our livebearers drop their fry in the tank so we don't stress (and possibly kill) the mother. Then the fry can be moved to their own tank.

Thanks everyone for the help. the babies were recently born without warning. they came fast. and are hiding in the floaating plants and the java fern also. there were 4 born. and seem to be thriving in the tank. the pigmy catfish kinda watches over them almost protecting them, on the bottom. but moslty their at the top hiding and eating. I even see color on a tiny one already. its very exciting!

Hey fintail, Glad to see they're doing ok.

It's not so ard to look after them if there are so few but watch out as they are easily sucked into the filter intake and or eaten.

Hope they grow well for you

The catfish probably isn't looking over them... newborn guppies like to hide in the gravel (there either were or are a lot more than 4 that are born at once) the catfish is most likely searching them out for a snack

HI everyone and thanks again for checking in with me. I had the catfish on another ocassion and he was babysitting the fry, safely under him. and not a bite was taken. today I moved the babies to the 5 gallon cause the parents were chasing them down, so now their safe and of course the same water was used. at least I know they will grow and be safe. please give me more ideas . thank you.

Does the other tank you put them in have live plants?? They love to hide and rest on them because they aren't very strong yet when they are just born, they also eat little pieces of algae and other things off of the plants for food

I am Not new to aquariums but am new to female live bearing fish
Bought 2 females and my friend said they are both pregnant ... Can anyone give me opinions on when to look out and remove mama s from divided portion of my 29 gal ? And who you suspect will go first ... And any other pointer welcome! Did some reading but so much contradiction makes it more confusing!
Would like to save this round and pick some to keep in the community once big enough and give the rest away ... Since the kids heard they are pregnant I am left with little choice ( haha ... )

The first one. You should remove the female after she finish dropping although that could sometimes be an hour or more. I think you should add more coverage such as plants, plastic or not.

image.jpg Posted on here a couple weeks ago confirming if my two females were pregnant, they are. Now I'm wondering if you can tell me how far along they are, I'm not able to tell. They are very box shaped and large but I'm hoping for an opinion They have very dark gravid spots in case you can't see and they are definitely bigger than the picture shows, quality is horrible due to movement

Do you have any idea about when they got pregnant? You can expect fry about 4 weeks after that.

Based on the pictures, I'd guess 1-2 more weeks to go, but if this is the first time they are pregnant then less than a week (first birth is always smaller).

1) Maybe 7-8 days
2) 12-14 days.

It's really hard to tell exactly how far along fish are (unless they have given birth for you before and you can count days from there), they are pregnant anywhere from 26-30ish days, but can hold them longer if they are stressed. My platys get a boxy \_/ shape to their bellys when you look at them from the side a few days before they give birth, tend to hide a little more and the male chases them around like crazy. I would say the fish in the first picture is farther along then the second..maybe a week or so left before she gives birth, the second has a while.

Ok..just wanted to make sure you didn't put her in a breeder box this early....it's can cause a lot of stress and cause her to abort the fry. Make sure the tank has lots of plants and hiding spots for the fry...mom will try to eat them, then put her back in the main tank when she is done having them.

Nooo, I find them too small, I did purchase one but the size stressed me out never mind the fish so that was returned immediately. There's places for the fry to hide but I am going to purchase some floating plans for them shortly. I moved her because I seen that if they started to look "boxy" they are getting close. But I don't know if I'm imagining itead:

I just had a platy give birth yesterday. When I turned on their light Sunday morning she still looked round to me, but as the day went on I thought she was starting to look more boxy, but I thought I was imagining it because I knew she was due between Saturday and Tuesday, and sure enough I came home from work yesterday and there were 11 fry hiding all over...she is definitely thinner then she was Sunday, but I still think she looks more round then she should, so I, wondering if the male chasing her around constantly stressed her and she's still holding a few fry, or again, it's just me. I know she probably had a lot more than 11, but I was gone all day so the fish in the tank probably had a nice buffet of fry.

Pic 1 about 0-1 weeks until she gives birth.

Adults or fry?

It depends on the numbwr of fry, but you might be able to house house all the fry in your 5 gallon if there are less than 10 but only temporarily. After about a month you would have to seek other residence for them..

Adults, you shouldn't really have adults permanently in a 5 gallon tank, but you could have two temporarily in there, or three if you do water changes at least twice weekly.

Hope that helps

As for the 10g,

You could house 5 adults happily in a 10g.. or all your fry until they are a month or two old.

If they are pregnant, they have quite a way to go (unless they aren't carrying many fry at all)

3 weeks is my estimate, unless this is their first pregnancy.

For sure it may take a while just like Mary765 has already mentioned. If they're pregnant , they're for sure not due yet.
