Is my guppy even pregnant??

Dakotapretki

I bought a female guppy from the store about a month ago thinking she was pregnant, she still has not give birth. It looked like she was having contractions today, she has a weird red fin looking object sticking out of her analfin and I’m not sure what it is because it’s been there for 10+ hours. I have my heater to the right temperature for guppy’s I have many hiding spots for her (as shown in the pictures below) but she chooses to have contractions in the open area? Is she even pregnant?? Please help!

Well she could be pregnant but the red thread things are camallanus worms. They are not easy to get rid of and spread to other fish easily. I had them once, luckily only 7 female guppies in a quarantine tank were exposed. Of those 7 only 3 survived treatment/recovery.

If she is pregnant, then it's at an very early stage. But like Demeter has already stated, these are camallanus worms.

How do you get rid of camallanus worms? Does it kill the guppy?

Should I return her back to the pet shop or what should I do?

The worms will eventually kill the guppy as well as infect the entire tank. There are a few treatments for camallanus worms but I suggest you do the googling on your own to get the finer details.

I’m getting some treatment from my local pet barn, thank you for your help

Well, returning that guppy with camallanus worms won't help you. For an lfs will refuse such a guppy. They could say that it must have happened in your tank and not in theirs.
