In my 12 gallon tank I keep barbs, gold barbs. About 2 weeks ago the belly of one of my males went red, and a female got " fat " and I could see black spots on her tummy. The male has been chasing the female around and doing some nipping. Especially where her bottom is

Here is the picture:

The female is the top one. Is she gravid?

I'm not too sure to be honest, my females are all HUGE 24/7 and all my males are in breeding colors right now, orange bellies everywhere. I will let you know that gold barbs need a minimum of 29gal tank for the smaller version and a 55 for the larger version. They get BIG, yours look young. When I used to bred them the ladies just got downright HUGE. The males, as you said get the red coloring on their bellies.
Heres a pic of my females when their not gravid(look at the reflection for a full profile) they are roughly 2.5-3" long. the larger guys get up to 4-5"

Nah, they take it as a compliment. I would seriously SERIOUSLY recommend a bigger tank Asap though. They don't handle well long term in small tanks. Also, are you keeping a gourami/betta in the tank with them? I see a bubble nest in the pic XD. These guys are great great fish but when they are confined, they can wreak a tank simply by swimming around and bumping into things(the gold barbs).
