Is My Gh And Kh Appropriate For Cherry Shrimp?

Hey everyone, I know I have posted MANY threads about my shrimp that I am purchasing but I want to make sure they will thrive and have a good life in the tank conditions. I just got my GH and KH test kit and these are the readings.

KH: 15 degrees
GH: 11-12 degrees
I know Cherry Shrimp are very hardy, but just to be safe, these readings are appropriate for these shrimp right?

To be honest I don't recommend gh above 15 so your under there as for kh they will adapt although I like it lower, I am in conversation at the moment with someone with almost the same as yours and they are breeding, if you want to drop it you can with RO water from your lfs but that would be a permanent change when doing water changes,

Are those readings for the tank or your tap water? You might want to test both to see if there's a difference. Some water changes could bring down the tank's values if they're concentrated from evaporation over time.

That's a good point from JenC
I keep forgetting to to tell people but one of our shrimpers pointed this out and I can't remember who, if those reading are correct it's your first offspring that are are key to your colony as they will be harder and cope better for the future

So basically I do all in my power to help the first shrimp breed then I just hope for the best?

That seems fine to me too. I've had similar #s, sometimes higher GH, and my shrimp have always been fine.

Will these be your first shrimp? What do you plan to get and where are they going?

Yes these are my first shrimp! I really want to get Painted Fire Red Cherry Shrimp from Aquatic Arts, but I need to make sure they survive because they are sort of expensive. I know I could start out with low grade but I'm just gonna go with the high grade.

Cherry shrimp can be so much fun. I remember I debated for a while which color to get but I also chose red. It's such a nice pop of color in a planted tank.

Have you looked or called around to see if any local fish stores carry them? My LFS carries red, fire red, orange, black, green, etc. You'd save some money not shipping them and the shrimp wouldn't have to make a journey.

Are they going into the 75 gallon you have listed in your profile? I fear those fish will find shrimp very tasty...

My LFS don't carry any. (Petsmart or Petco)
I choose not to buy fish from either of these places but the nearest actual good fish store is like and hour and a half away. NOOOOOO I would never put shrimp into the 75 it would be all out war in that tank! I am doing a shrimp only 20 gallon planted long

Although I will use some not as good looking offspring as food for the 75 to keep the vibrant red going.

Yeah, Petco and Petsmart wouldn't offer much.

A 20 gallon long with just shrimp sounds great! I hope you'll post pics when you get started.

Yes I definitely will, that tank will probably be my main profile pic once it's all set up!

By no means an expert as others here. I got my shrimp from FishRFriendz and Mcasella You have gotten some good info. But the best advice I can give is to ensure you start with a mature/seasoned tank. My GH Range:5-8 and KH Range:3-4. Worked out nicely. Had plenty of moss to graze on and also added cuttlebone.

Good Luck to you.

Oh, by the way "Welcome" to the forum.

Yes I am definitely going to start out with a mature tank. I couldn't even get the shrimp now if I wanted to, I don't have a ton of money I'm a 14 year old! Thanks for the welcome to the forum!
