Is My Filter Pad Right?

I just cut out my own filter pad for the first time instead of using cartridges. I'm not sure if I put it in right. It seems to spread out farther back than the cartridges, and I don't know where the dirty water pushes up, under the pad or in front, hopefully behind. Please give me advice on this by telling me if there is a issue with how its set up, thank you! Pictures are included.

 

I guess that can work. For those filters, I usually cut it to the shape of the cartridge it came with and place it in the same place.

Would you just cut it to half the width? Because I just kept the width it was
