Is it typical behaviour for a betta to hang out all over the tank?

I've got a 55 gallon tank holding one betta, twelve neons and nine corys, also a bunch of plants. The betta does his usual thing at the top, he spends time with his reflection, swims all over the place, seems happy. He swims all over the tank, spends a lot of time swimming along the bottom, sometimes he schools with the neons (weird) and sometimes he hangs out all still in his castle. My question is this: Is it typical behaviour for a betta to hang out all over the tank? I always thought bettas mainly kept to the top. Also, is it normal behaviour for him to spend several minutes just resting in an enclosed space or against a plant?

That sounds a like my betta. He is temporarily in a 75 gallon with some platys and he is all over the tank. They love swimming room!

Yes, all normal. Bettas sleep and rest on the bottom of the tank or in plants. Lucky betta w/ all that space! Probably gets tuckered out expending all that energy.

Sounds like a happy fish. Not sure why betta are labled top water fish, they spend time where they please in the water column, then return to the surface when they need to breathe.

I think that they are labeled as top of the tank range because they are labyrinth fish.

Yes, it's normal. I think you should start worrying if he stops swimming around. Sounds like you have quite the happy fish there.
