Is It Possible To Overfeed My Blue Lobster?

I am currently raising up a young blue lobster. I am feeding him about an inch long piece of cucumber, about twice a day. He doesn’t stop eating! So, my question is “Is it possible to overfeed blue lobsters?” Or will they stop eating when their full? I am just a little concerned about his safety.

Thanks,

Yes you can! And remember they are also scavengers so if it’s in a tank with other stuff he will be eating even more than you are feeding him... I’d cut that way back especially if he’s small still

I have the same problem! I feed him multiple HikarI crab pellets twice a day even though he is only 2.5 inches big.

How can you tell if you're feeding them too much? Mine also seems like he always wants more no matter what :/

Dear pomfish

I had noticed that he often keeps the cucumber he doesn't want at that time beside this specific plant, as like a storage. He then comes back a few hours later to munch on the rest if he's hungry then. So, I think that blue lobsters / crayfish have discipline towards how much food they eat, and how hungry / full they are.

mine is a bottomless pit. one of my sword plants was dying so I thought id give him a snack and he almost immediately jumped up and started eating from it floating on the surface
IMG_1399.jpg it was gone by the next day, I was stunned. so I definitely think you could overfeed if you feed until he turns it down, mine always wants more.

Maybe blue lobsters have different personalities, lol

mine is very aggressive and is always trying to attack me when I walk past the tank, he’s hilarious.

Many animal natural instincts tell them that when they find food, they should eat it, because they may not find food again for quite a while.

I think they do! They seem to be so smart. I'm also convinced they hear. I have my tank inside my room right by the door. Whenever I just walk in, Bary (my lobster) would freak out hard and get kinda defensive with his claws after he was startled. Its so cute and slightly funny but I felt so bad for disturbing. So I started announcing myself when I walk in by saying things like "Bary I'm coming in~" and he kinda turns a bit to me and watches me come in that's it. Its been like this for weeks now and everything is fine, no more freaking out! He's glad his human got some manners lol

But yes, I think I'm starting to see him reject some food so, at least he does that (but he eats it later).

I agree with Plecodreams certain fish/frogs/lobsters etc are used to their natural instincts which is to eat when the find food... it’s hardwired into their DNA... sometimes the food is not always available... so when they see it they eat until stuffed because they may not have food for days or weeks sometimes in the wild... to use an example my ACDF’s and ACF’s... where they come from they may not find food for a week so it’s in them to eat and eat and eat but what we have to remember in the aquarium world is we have food for them readily available so it’s often very harmful to feed them too much as it will make them sick because they are eating too much.... so it’s best to find out what and how often they eat in the wild and try and imitate that schedule as much as you can

Very true, I know my bettas are like that! Is it ever okay to fast them for a day if I think I've been feeding them too much?

Absolutely... everyone of my fish get a fast every Monday... it’s actually good for them
